For those psychologists just starting off, you may want to hear this 👇 As we journey through our careers as helpers, there comes a point where we realize just how far we've come. We've grown, evolved, and learned. But sometimes, in our eagerness to heal others, we forget to nurture ourselves. I've noticed a pattern among us, especially those new to our field: Sacrificial Helping Syndrome (SHS). It's that deep-seated urge to constantly prioritize others' needs over our own well-being. This is more than just dedication; it's a challenge we must overcome. By recognizing SHS, we not only honor our commitment to helping but also ensure we move forward with the strength, compassion, and wisdom we've cultivated. So today, take a moment to recognize that you can be both a powerful guardian for others and for yourself. Stand firm in your values, care for your inner healer, and create a safe space for growth—yours and your clients'. Remember: ✅ Set clear boundaries - it's an act of self-respect ✅ Prioritize self-care - it's not selfish, it's necessary ✅ Seek support or consultation - we all need someone in our corner The goal is not just to help others, but to do so in a way that is sustainable and fulfilling for you as a professional and as a person. However, just as importantly, my wish is that they are able to really enjoy their work, bring their creativity and their individual and unique gifts into this major part of their lives.   Big picture work. Aligning with where the pain research is now going – it is no longer enough to educate, but to move, and learn to do it without fear. It’s hard to keep on top of the latest evidence-based practice trends. Don’t you wish somebody would just help collate all the information for you in one place!? Well, you’ll be happy to hear, this is already available! There are many ways to find out about research evidence where the hard work has been done for you and you can access a collated, and often critiqued, summary of the research evidence on particular topics. One source is systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines, but there are also websites dedicated to delivering this type of information on your chosen topic. This video shows you a great resource for all the home mods OTs out there – it’s called the Home Modifications Information Clearinghouse. Dr Pat Deegan, in my humble opinion, has influenced the true notion of person-led recovery and recovery-oriented practice more than anyone else. I love Pat's saying, "Illnesses don't recover. People do." We are proud to be delivering Pat’s Certified Personal Medicine Coaching (CPMC) program in Australia, which fundamentally shifts the way support can be provided to people experiencing life challenges. These could be a combination of emotional, physical, social, relational, financial and environmental wellbeing challenges, of which we can all face from time to time but don’t want them to endure. Personal Medicines are the actions we do to heal and recover, not what we take. It reclaims the concept that medicine is not just a pill we take but also the healing actions we do. Certified Personal Medicine Coaches (CPMC’s) are skilled in coaching others to discover and refine their own personalised actions that have a healing benefit over life challenges  The CPMC 12-week program focuses on the person instead of the fixing of illnesses/problems and offers hope-filled approaches and tools for people, families and providers to introduce to others.
