We have met with over 30 hiring managers across Sydney’s building services market since the start of the year and this is what they’ve told us. - It’s been a slow start to the year however the amount of work either in hand (awaiting a start) or at tender stage is astonishing. - It’s expected that many of these projects will be back online, or awarded before the Easter break (so busy times ahead!). - Anticipated busy sectors include residential, aged care, industrial, education, commercial fit outs and data centres. - New build commercial is out. Health care will continue to be busy, although the days of the ‘mega hospital’ is over. Most health projects will be in regional areas. - National consultancies are largely moving to a ‘one team’ resource, sharing projects across the other states to avoid peaks and troughs. - Hybrid/flexible working is here to stay. Salaries are expected to flat line. - The general sentiment for the year ahead is positive.

The burnout rate in some professions is astonishing, isn't it? In my current role as a Downtown Development Authority (DDA)director, the average tenure is 2.4 years, but l've been in this position for 3.5 years. What's driving this trend in certain jobs? I believe it largely boils down to the workload one person can manage alone. Downtown directors are responsible for a wide range of tasks including organization, promotions, events, economic development, downtown design, and managing volunteer groups and committees, often with minimal support. Ultimately, it all comes down to budget constraints and whether programs can afford to hire additional staff. What other careers have a high turnover?
