Selfie Sunday: Wilderness Medicine is a mix of leadership, survival skills, and of course medicine. But it’s also being able to be out in the wilderness, in not always optimal conditions, and not just survive but be able to perform at a high level. This is core of backcountry and wilderness rescue and retrieval medicine; come in after people having the worst day of their life and be absolutely sound, mentally, physically, and in terms of equipment. I’m not actively on a Mountain Rescue service anymore (though some of us are chatting about setting up a volunteer service in Kenya) which I used to joke was a ‘mandatory hiking group’. And of course as you get older, many more responsibilities start tugging at your sleeve making it harder to get out on longer adventures. I’ll never (in public at least) judge what other schools and instructors are doing, that’s their business. Of the list of topics at the top that make up wilderness medicine, I’ve never been sure which makes up the plurality. But if it isn’t being able to perform in austere conditions and bad weather, that’s definitely a close second. So I’ll continue to get myself out there.
