Today is National Cancer Survivor’s Day, a time to celebrate those who have overcome cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and renew our commitment to fighting this deadly disease. I’m commemorating this day by honouring the memory of my beloved aunt who sadly lost her battle with breast cancer a few years ago, precisely 2015. Her courage and strength in facing the illness was an inspiration to me. Her passing is a reminder of how vital early detection is - if caught early, many cancers are very treatable. I urge everyone to be proactive about screening and to see a doctor promptly if you notice any symptoms. In aunt Calista’s memory, I’ve taken on a walking challenge to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Every stride I take is fuelled by her optimism even in the face of so many challenges and obstacles. 💖 Race for Life: Our Family's Mission to Fight Cancer Together 💖 I don’t usually share personal updates here, but this one is incredibly important to me. Cancer is happening right now, and that’s why our family is participating in the Race for Life on 20th July to raise funds and save lives. Our participation in Race for Life holds a deeply personal significance—we are honouring and supporting the incredible journey of Support Connect CEO, matthew heathman, my partner and our children's father, who has bravely battled a rare form of bone cancer this past 18 months. Cancer has touched our lives profoundly. Watching matthew heathman fight with unwavering strength and resilience has been both challenging and inspiring. Throughout his treatment and recovery, he has shown us the true meaning of courage, perseverance, and hope. This race is more than just running; it’s about celebrating the victories, big and small, that we have experienced together. It’s about coming together as a family and community to raise awareness and support for all those affected by cancer. Every step we take is a step towards hope, research, and finding a cure. Being in a Pre-Election Period as a civil servant means that I am very limited in terms of work-related posts I can make (not that I post that regularly anyway!). While I'm hoping there will be updates to make and publications to shout-out in the months following the election, I thought I would take the opportunity to shout-out a personal project my wife and I have been working on. We're both very passionate and enthusiastic about raising money for cancer charities - aside from a few (COVID-19 related) blips, we've done something to raise money every year that we've been together. This year is no exception: We've already done a Race for Life for Cancer Research and we're doing the MacMillan Mighty Hike in a few weeks for MacMillan Cancer support, and will be doing the Ealing half marathon in September. Cancer Research and MacMillan both do amazing work to find and implement new treatments and support people who are battling cancer. Reading our fundraising page there are some statistics on cancer treatment that I hope highlights that, although cancer treatment today is incredibly advanced, there is never room for complacency and a lot of this progress relies on fundraising. And that fundraising relies on everyone else's kindness and willingness to give for a greater cause. World Cancer Day 2025 – February 4 World Cancer Day, observed every year on February 4, is a global initiative to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. It began in 2000 during the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) established the day to unite the global community in the fight against cancer and reduce the stigma surrounding the disease. In New Zealand, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death, with approximately one in three people affected by the disease in their lifetime. World Cancer Day is a reminder to take action- whether through prevention, supporting those affected, or advocating for better cancer care. To participate, you can: 1. Wear a ribbon to show solidarity and raise awareness. 2. Donate to New Zealand cancer organizations like the Cancer Society or Leukemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. 3. Join local events, such as fundraisers (Mia’s sexy bums), walks, or community gatherings, to support cancer patients and research. 4. Educate yourself and others about cancer prevention, screening, and early detection. Additionally, the history of Cancer Talk Week, initiated by Macmillan Cancer Support over two decades ago, adds a layer of respect and credibility to this observance. By fostering open conversations, Macmillan's initiative has helped millions face cancer with more empathy and less fear. To celebrate, consider throwing a themed party, organising a fun run, hosting a movie night, holding a bake sale, or arranging a crafting day. This September, our colleague Laura is taking on a meaningful challenge—walking 30 miles with her beloved dogs, Lilly, Holly, and Hannah, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. 🐾🚶♀️ For Laura, this walk represents hope, strength, and the unwavering commitment to a future where cancer no longer tears families apart. The statistics remind us why this cause is so crucial: - Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. - Over 385,000 new cancer cases are reported every year in the UK. - Nearly 460 lives are lost to cancer every single day. But thanks to relentless research efforts, cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 50 years. Today, nearly 1 in 2 people diagnosed with cancer will survive for at least 10 years. This progress is inspiring, but the fight isn’t over. Laura’s walk is more than just a physical challenge—it’s a step toward hope and a future free from cancer. Today we are marking the Norwegian edition of Football Shirt Friday, organized by Barnekreftforeningen (The Norwegian Childhood Cancer Society).   Every other day, a child in Norway gets cancer. Thanks to advancements in research, 4 out of 5 survive, but childhood cancer is still the most common cause of death among children aged 1-14 in Norway. 70-75% of those who survive are affected by long-term side effects that they'll live with for the rest of their lives. Childhood cancer is not the same as adult cancer - children aren't small adults.    The goal of the campaign is to focus attention on the need for research into childhood cancer and to show support for everyone affected.   The Norwegian Childhood Cancer Society puts it so nicely: "This is a national fundraising effort, with the goal of bringing together Norway's largest and finest team in the fight against childhood cancer."   To make a contribution - Vipps to 705404   #FotballtrøyeFredag #FootballShirtFriday Barnekreftforeningen
