September is International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the extraordinary impact that cancer has on children, their families and the community. At Children's Cancer Institute we believe a life should be long. That every child should have the chance to grow up, grow old, plan exciting futures and live a life that is full of possibilities. But sadly, cancer cuts life short for hundreds of children every year, before they’ve even had a chance to make their mark. For 40 years, we have been conducting research into the causes, prevention and cure of childhood cancer so that more kids with cancer not only survive, but go on to live long, healthy lives. Since our lab doors opened in 1984, we have made extraordinary process. In the 1960s, cancer was practically a death sentence in children. Today, more than 8 out of 10 children will survive their cancer, but 70% of those survivors will suffer long-term side effects as a result of their treatment. That's why our researchers won't stop until every child can live a long, healthy and happy life. Originally founded by two families of children with cancer - community support, dedicated families and loyal supporters who share a belief that no child should die of cancer has always been at the centre of everything we do. Would you know if your child had cancer? September is childhood cancer awareness month, also known as Go Gold 💛 Childhood cancer is regarded as 'rare', and yet is the single biggest cause of death-by-disease in children. Aoife Flanagan was just 3 years old when she was taken by cancer. She only had her germ cell cancer diagnosis for five days before she passed away. This was directly related to her late diagnosis. In fact, 80% of children are at stage 4 by the time of diagnosis, which massively limits treatment options. If a simple blood test (to detect AFP tumour markers) was taken in one of the 10+ visits to healthcare professionals that Aoife had in the month leading up to her diagnosis, Aoife would still be here. Aoife's Bubbles Charity aim to help prevent other families going through what Aoife and her family did, by raising awareness for germ cell cancer and other childhood cancers - the symptoms are often very similar. Simple Modern doing something really unique and special for those fighting cancer.

It was encouraging to see @Sir Ed Davey raise the issue of cancer care at today's PMQs. The situation is alarming, with nearly one-third of cancer patients not starting treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral, far short of the Government’s target of 85%. While the Prime Minister understandably didn't pre-empt the Darzi review, due out tomorrow, he did reaffirm the Government’s commitment to investing in diagnostic machines. While more CT and MRI machines are welcome, it’s crucial that the full cancer care pathway is considered. Without parallel investment in treatment services, diagnostic improvements alone will only add to the backlog. Efforts like Sir Ed’s question today, along with the tireless work of charities and campaigners, help keep cancer care in the spotlight. Let’s hope this pressure leads to real policy changes that make cancer a top health priority. Quite looking forward to the review coming out tomorrow - a big first step for this new Government on the long journey to getting the NHS back on track. 

Cancer Survivor Day is indeed a time to celebrate and honor those who have triumphed over cancer. For many survivors, the support and care they receive at home from their family can be instrumental in their recovery journey. It's a day to acknowledge the resilience of survivors and the importance of the love, understanding, and assistance provided by their families. On Cancer Survivor Day, families might come together to reflect on the journey they've been through, express gratitude for each other's support, and celebrate the milestones achieved along the way. It can be a time for survivors to share their stories, express their emotions, and receive affirmation and encouragement from their loved ones. Families can mark the day in various ways, such as organizing a special meal, planning activities that the survivor enjoys, or simply spending quality time together. It's also an opportunity to raise awareness about cancer survivorship and the ongoing support needed for survivors even after they've completed treatment. Ultimately, Cancer Survivor Day is a reminder of hope, resilience, and the power of love and support in overcoming challenges. It's a chance for families to come together and celebrate life, strength, and the bonds that hold them together through difficult times.

While National Cancer Survivors Day has passed, the spirit of honoring and supporting cancer survivors, especially our seniors, remains crucial. Here are a few ways we can continue to celebrate their resilience and courage: 📖Share Stories: Encourage survivors to share their stories of hope and survival. These narratives can be incredibly empowering and provide comfort to others navigating a similar journey. 📣Educate and Advocate: Use your platform, however big or small, to spread awareness about the challenges seniors face with cancer and the importance of specialized support. ❣️Perform Acts of Kindness: Small gestures can make a big difference. Consider volunteering at local senior centers, or simply reaching out to those in your community who have experienced cancer, to let them know they are not alone. 🚨 As the culmination of the #generalelection draws closer, a leading cancer charity has warned that the survival rates for the disease in the UK are 25 years behind some European countries and the sector is at “breaking point”. 📉 Analysis from Macmillan Cancer Support shows that this country is a particular laggard compared to Scandinavian countries, with figures from the charity suggesting that the latest five-year survival rates for men with colon cancer in England (2021), and women with the same cancer in Wales (2020), are below what Sweden had achieved in 2002. ⚠️ Survival rates for women with cervical cancer in England are some 25 years behind those observed in Norway, according to the charity.
