The creative industry yesterday lost its collective socks over the new Kellogg’s campaign. https://lnkd.in/epF_pxbV Personally, I’m still scratching my head. As are many of my family and friends. Like me, they have no idea what it’s trying to say or achieve. 'The OG'? Original Gangster, apparently. Are we all supposed to get that? Two of my kids got it. Two didn't. Maybe grandad here just isn’t the target (like I don't eat cereal). Grandma was also puzzled, as were many others I contacted in the name of research. The trouble with creatives is that they think the buying public are as playful as they are. That they think just like them. They believe that 40-year-old Julie, a housewife with three screaming kids and rent she can’t afford, has nothing better to do than decipher their cryptic, esoteric messages. I’m kind of on the inside of the industry and it just didn't click without an explanation. And you can't provide one for every single person who reads the ad. By the time Julie has decoded the ad, if she can be bothered, her kids are out of control, running amok around the Tesco car park. I’ve had enough of this kind of Cannes-focused B2C bumfluff, written in a sort of insider's code that has creatives nudging each other and giggling like naughty schoolchildren in on some puerile joke. Meanwhile, simple-minded members of the public like me shrug their shoulders and try to get on with their lives. But, you’ll say, the Kellogg’s ad isn’t designed to sell. Its aim is brand-building or brand awareness or brand positioning or some such crap. But how on-point is it when half your audience don’t understand your abstruse references? And shouldn't it be shifting cereal? The ad-industry insiders on here are always quick to say ‘clear beats clever every time’. But that goes out of the window fast when the latest obscure B2C ad drops and a mutual back-slapping exercise ensues. I’m not saying I’m right or wrong. I’m just glad I don’t have to write the ads.

2 reasons I loooved this ad campaign McDonald's placed on highways. 1. This is a perfect example of how simple visuals and few words can create a powerful message. A little reminder can be all it takes to pull in more customers. 2. Reaching the point where your people unmistakably recognize your brand at a glance is a huge feat. The name and (whole) logo aren't featured on these signs, but we we all know what company it is.
