2019 marks 75 years since "modern" #Commonwealth & since #Ireland left. My new paper explores how in 1950s an informal external #citizenship #trade #monetary & broader association was reestablished but how #NorthernIreland issue scuppered idea of rejoining https://lnkd.in/eFjRzikc The "external association" prism - a concept going back to 1920s seperation of #Ireland from the UK - can reveal much about how how post-war 1950s #Commonwealth was transforming whilst still playing a significant people-to-people, trade, financial, diplomatic and functional role. Until #Ireland & also UK joined EEC in 1970s its links with #Commonwealth remained of some significance so future work will focus on how association atrophied to a break point then as Commonwealth #citizenship & #trade links declined but its role as a bridge between world groupings became clearer (especially after founding of multilateral Commonwealth Secretariat in 1965).
