Eva Garland Consulting, LLC (EGC) is excited to announce that Nature Portfolio (Nature Biotechnology) has published our groundbreaking work on the first programmatic intervention that demonstrably increases participation by underrepresented groups in the The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. EGC’s leadership of the NIH Applicant Assistance Program (AAP), in collaboration with the @National Cancer Institute and 10 other NIH Institutes and Centers, has provided customized coaching in preparing SBIR applications to over 700 small businesses from across the entrepreneurial ecosystem. As presented in the Nature Biotechnology paper, the AAP has resulted in a two-fold increase in representation of women-owned small businesses (WOSBs) and socially and economically disadvantaged (SDBs) in the NIH SBIR program: the percentage of SBIR awardees from WOSBs who participated in the AAP was 37% compared to 15% of non-participants; similarly the percentage of SBIR awardees from SDBs who participated in the AAP was 34% vs.16% of non-participants. Over the 40-year history of the SBIR program, the NIH AAP represents the first documented intervention that has successfully achieved one of the SBIR program’s original goals of fostering and encouraging participation in innovation and entrepreneurship by SDBs and WOSBs. #Innovation #EmpoweringEntrepreneurs #DiversityInScience #NIH #SBIR #STTR #WOSB #SDB #Nature https://lnkd.in/e4xySYVz

🔥 𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 at the 57th Annual Meeting of German Association for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology (DGTI) together with the 31st Annual Meeting of the German Society for Immunogenetics (DGI) Following a great presentation by Christopher Baum (Berlin Institute of Health in der Charité) and Friedemann Horn, we dove deep into what it really takes to build a successful 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Here's what stood out from my presentation the discussions: 1️⃣ It takes an ecosystem, not just a founder. Your groundbreaking science can only change lives when it's transformed into a product or service. To grow, you need the right mix of talent, funding, and partnerships. 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳: 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦. 🤝 2️⃣ Venture building while managing an academic career? It’s possible, but beware of the pitfalls. We discussed balancing research and entrepreneurship, and how to navigate the complexities of funding and commercialization. Either way, you will only have an impact when you step out of your (academic) comfort zone. 🧬💼 3️⃣ Choosing your allies wisely: investors, analysts, and consultants. In the startup world, the right partnerships can propel you forward—but the wrong ones can hold you back. Our discussions revealed how to identify those who genuinely support your vision. Here, trusted partners like a #ruhrstartupfactory is and will be vital🚀 My key takeaway: Starting a venture is challenging, but you don't have to do it alone. Leverage your network, trust the ecosystem, and keep pushing forward. 👥 A big thank you to everyone who joined the lively discussions—especially the founders and aspiring entrepreneurs who made the session so engaging! Curious to hear: What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to balancing academia and entrepreneurship? Comment below! 👇

Two minutes that warm my heart. People often ask why I do what I do at the Science Entrepreneur Club, especially given it is voluntary and on top of a day job. Hearing how the life science ecosystem benefits from the Science Entrepreneur Club’s initiatives, across both the #BioCapitalNetwork and #BioEntrepreneurClub, is exactly why. Once a year, we run the #InnovatorsClub, a 10-week pre-accelerator programme for a cohort of early-stage companies in the BioEntrepreneur Club. After completing Cohort V of the #InnovatorsClub last week, we sat down with each of the cohort founders to hear their feedback on the programme. The resulting video warms my heart with overarching themes of community, connections and content. A huge amount of time and effort goes in to delivering this programme each year so hearing this sort of feedback makes me so proud of all the work that the entirely voluntary SEC team does and the impact it has. A special thanks to my partner-in-crime Daniel Vilafranca García for helping deliver Cohort V! Of course one of the most tangible outcomes of Cohort V is Alice of Panthura winning a prize package including three months of rent-free lab space at London BioScience Innovation Centre (LBIC) and many other goodies!! Another huge thank you to Cohort V Gold sponsors Marks & Clerk and London BioScience Innovation Centre (LBIC) for powering the programme as well as all those who supported and delivered a session during the 10-weeks.
