The Importance of Selection Over Effort In the process of applying to American universities, many parents rely on the rankings provided by US News or QS to guide their children's school choices. However, over time, fluctuations in these rankings have led to unexpected outcomes. Today marks the release of the 2025 QS World University Rankings, with #Purdue University now ranked 89th, the 8th ranked public university in the United States. Back in 2022, when I applied, it was outside the top 100. Conversely, some of my classmates applied early decision to Boston University (BU), which was then within the top 100, and shed tears of joy upon receiving their acceptance letters. This year, Boston University's QS ranking has fallen outside the top 100, while its annual cost of attendance, including tuition and living expenses, is more than double that of Purdue University. This decline in ranking, coupled with the exorbitant costs, casts doubt on the wisdom of their initial choice. Choosing wisely before things reveal their true value requires both luck and foresight. When you step into a luxury car going in the opposite direction, no matter how hard you try, it will get further and further away from your destination. Choosing to learn Servant Leadership may seem like entering a niche field, but I believe it will become popular around the world in a few years. Servant Leadership advocates for serving, empowering, and inspiring others. It fulfills the needs of most individuals to be seen, heard, and respected in societies. As a professor for the MBA program and senior lead for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) within #PurdueGlobal’s School of Business, Bea Bourne shares the why behind her work. "I started at AT&T right out of high school and moved up through the ranks. The job I enjoyed most was as a corporate trainer for sales. It’s where I discovered what I’m intended to do: teach. There's nothing like experiencing a learner’s lightbulb moment and seeing someone connect to a concept. It led me to Purdue Global, where I teach in the MBA program and serve as the senior lead of DEIB for the School of Business and Information Technology. I wanted to work with adults from the start. I completed all my degrees — my bachelor’s, my master’s and my doctorate — as a working adult. I know the work; I know what it’s like to balance being a student, parent and working professional. I am doing what I was created to do because of that journey. I see myself in my students, and I believe this is where I can make a difference, by helping other working adults advance toward what they are created to do as well. I am fortunate to work with a group of fellow faculty and staff members who want to be here as much as I do. We are involved and care about the success of our students. That passion for student success carries over to the other part of my work, too. As senior lead for DEIB in the School of Business, I enjoy working with others to create initiatives within our school that foster better engagement, a sense of belonging and more inclusion. In the DEIB space, the challenges we address are present everywhere. They are universal. I try to celebrate the wins and concentrate on what I can change. We’ve had real DEIB successes throughout all the schools. For example, an inaugural chief diversity officer was appointed. We created a curriculum guide for our professors on DEIB principles. Juneteenth is now a university holiday, and we have a university diversity statement. There have been other wins, and I hang my hat on the fact that I can see the needle being moved. That’s what keeps me going. Meaningful change isn’t instant, like flipping a switch. It’s slow and steady." https://lnkd.in/gNZz29K3

Mission Statements, Mottos, Values & your MBA Application (some tips on school research) If you've poked around the #MBA admissions world for any amount of time, you've probably heard of Stanford #GSB and their famous motto: “Change lives, change organizations, change the world.” And you probably know that they do indeed seek applicants who have the stuff needed to create such change. Which means, throughout your #application you'd want to share some authentic moments from your life that imply you have and can change the world. All #Bschools have missions, mottos or values, and it is worth getting to know them as you do your school research. Anyone who knows me, knows I am "loco" for Duke #Fuqua and Dean Bill Boulding and the school's focus on decency (DQ or the "decency quotient") - want to know more about Duke's values, read "Living our Values" on Fuqua's "about" page. Here are some excerpts from other top programs and their missions: #MITSloan - to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world & to generate ideas that advance management practice (plus their mens et manus philosophy) #IESE - to develop leaders who strive to have a deep, positive and lasting impact on people, companies and society through professional excellence, integrity & spirit of service. #Tuck - We will develop wise, decisive leaders with global perspectives who will transform organizations & change the world. #CBS - Educating and developing leaders and builders of enterprises who create value for their stakeholders and society at large. (Which you can see big-time in their recent doubling-down on climate and tech initiatives). #INSEAD - to bring together people, cultures and ideas to develop responsible leaders who transform business and society. (also note their recent curriculum overhaul to embed sustainability) #Kellogg - to educate, equip and inspire leaders who build strong organizations and wisely leverage the power of markets to create lasting value. (plus note their LOR Question 1 which talks about how it "values students who are inclusive and encouraging of others with differing perspectives and backgrounds" and asks recommenders to share an example) And so much more that schools tout as values: #NYUStern and their "EQ+IQ" focus #ChicagoBooth and the famous "Chicago Approach" + their "Pay it forward" culture So, as you are doing your school research for your MBA #applications, look at the school's values and think about how they mesh with your own + identify ways to express those in your essays.
