[HKIA Journal | Issue 79: Community] From Spaces to Places: How Retail Centres in Sha Tin New Town Cultivate Community Identity Don Hong Renowned as the world’s most densely populated hub of shopping malls, Hong Kong serves as an exemplar illustrating the profound influence of consumption activities on our daily lives. Nonetheless, there are more shopping malls strategically positioned within new towns, intricately connected to an extensive transit system, public housing and other real estate developments. This planning approach has effectively reconfigured the residential landscape and redefined the communal fabric in Hong Kong. This essay will explore the relationship between built environments and the incubation of community identity. It will then examine how the physical setting at retail centres cultivates community identity particularly in Sha Tin new town, with suggestions of the challenges and opportunities associated with this endeavor. CONGRATULATIONS to Cédrix Tsambang, Christolle Tsambang and the Chorus Architecture (CA) Cameroonian team for winning 1ST Place 🥇at PRIX RAMSES 2024! 🥳🎉 Their design mitigates urban pollution and increases urban green space https://lnkd.in/dzjsTfJd Tell us what you like about the design. We can start to think about how to create ideal urban spaces What we tend to hear on why people like "estate (aka suburban)" living * Less noise (traffic, neighbours above and below/to the side) * Close to nature * Less expensive for more living space * More independence on how to maintain one's property (as long as you maintain esthetics nobody can impose "development fees" for things you don't want) What they love about high density urban living * High speed telecommunications * Views from upper floors * Plenty of service and shopping options * Walking distance to restaurants and entertainment * Multiple schools, hospitals, universities * More employment opportunities * Multiple transportation options What are your recommendations on how to make high density urban living more like a quiet leafy estate?

Sustainability in architecture is not a new concept, as creating functional, aesthetically pleasing and liveable spaces for individuals and communities that will stand the test of time is the very definition of good design. In recent years, this sentiment has also started to permeate consumer preferences, accelerating the integration of eco-friendly principles into mainstream architecture. Sandhya Mahadevan Tatler Asia

Looking forward to talking at the UK-China Urban Regeneration Forum in Shenzhen tomorrow. It’ll be a good opportunity to talk about some of our work including Battersea Power Station, the King's Cross Gasholders and the Weston Library. The work we’ve done on these projects gives us insight into how we can breathe new life and purpose into historic buildings, as well as make them more accessible for this and future generations. However, the learnings we take from these projects aren’t just applicable to historic monuments. Most of the buildings we will have in 2050 have already been built so we have to be considerably more creative if we’re going to achieve Hong Kong’s 2050 carbon emission targets. The answer is not knocking down buildings and starting again; the slash and burn approach will add considerably to our carbon footprint. We need to tread much more lightly, finding ways to repurpose buildings so that we can create a city that emits less carbon whilst also being more liveable. #architecture #retrofit #hongkong #repurpose #liveablecities #urbanrenewal

🌍 How can we ensure the urban projects and spaces we design seamlessly integrate sustainability, social wellbeing, and responsible economic activity? The challenge in modern urban development is understanding how to balance these critical elements without causing unintended consequences. Often, projects focus on one aspect at the expense of others, missing the opportunity to drive impact across multiple dimensions. That's where Gigamapping comes in. Developed by by Birger Sevaldson and his team at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Gigamapping helps visualize complex systems and their interrelationships, enabling more comprehensive and integrative design processes. This method allows for a deeper understanding of the connections and dynamics within a urban project, leading to more sustainable and well-rounded outcomes. At Harmony Nexus, we are a firm believers that tools like these can help us create urban spaces that are more harmonious, regenerative and evolutionary. Embrace this holistic approach and drive impactful urban change! #UrbanPlanning #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityWellbeing #SystemicImpact #Innovation
