Spending half her life as a refugee, Jamila Afghani, Founder and President of WILPF Afghanistan and MADRE partner, is mobilizing for a feminist peace for #Afghan women and girls. "I don’t remember a single day in Afghanistan that there was no bomb blast or there was no fighting or shooting or firing. That feeling always pushed me to work for peace. I should not let my children or the new generation of the country suffer from the same trauma that I have been dealing with." Women's Leadership Coach & Speaker | Helping women in schools and non-profits to lead more confidently, authentically, and unapologetically.
International Women's Day is a celebration and a call to action. I made this video in 2023 to honor my great-grandmother, Naziba, a Lebanese immigrant. I want to remember where I came from and how fortunate I am to tell her story and mine. She was not a refugee, but many immigrant stories begin with escaping war. Women and girls around the world are victims of war and conflict at an increasing rate. Gaza is making the biggest headlines right now, but conflicts in the Congo, Afghanistan, and more rage on. "More than 600 million women and girls lived in conflict-affected countries in 2022, a 50 per cent increase since 2017. Civilians around the world need greater humanitarian aid than ever before—but countries are instead increasing military spending, which topped USD 2.2 trillion in 2022." UN Women is calling for increased participation from women in the peace-building process, increased humanitarian spending, and reduced military spending. If you feel disconnected from this information, begin by reading this article ⤵ and educate yourself. When instead of children, schools host missile launchers, explosives and armed terrorists, they are no longer considered schools but a military bases, and in accordance with international law, are legitimate targets. Many around the world, deliberately or not, misinterpret international law. The law doesn't say schools and hospitals must never be attacked. It clearly says, that they should not be attached AS LONG AS THEY ONLY SERVE FOR CIVILIAN PURPOSES. The international law clearly states, that any such facility that is used for military purposes - immediately becomes a legit target. Period. 12% of UNRWA employees are also active members of terror groups (mostly Hamas but also Islamic Jihad and others). Their "schools" teach (or taught...) young kids how to become martyrs and kill Jews. Its facilities actively host terrorists, and missiles are constantly fired from schools and other UNWRA facilities. Under its facilities Hamas dug tunnels, to use kids as human shields, and it drew power and internet connectivity directly from the UNWRA headquarters. UNRWA must be de-funded and dismantled immediately. #hamas #gaza #terrorism #unrwa

M&E for Refugee Resettlement | Human Rights Research | Medium Writer | MSc Int'l Development | Emphasis on Migration and Displacement
It is #WorldRefugeeDay, and millions of people around the world are livingin dire situations have lasted so long that they strain the meaning of the word “crisis”. Many of these situations have faded from the public consciousness, meaning that the response is underfunded and people feel forgotten on top of everything else. If you live in a country that selectively funds humanitarian efforts and/or imposes harsh anti-migration policies, you can be part of the solution. I include recommendations for this in my article outlining the challenges facing #Rohingya refugees and the broader democracy movement in #Myanmar / #Burma, which invaluable input from Nay C. M. Thet. I encourage you to read this article or the countless others about the neglected crises in Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Haiti, and elsewhere, and then make a plan to do something about it. https://lnkd.in/eHmrxm3v

In #Bangladesh, the country of my birth, decades have been distilled into days, and a youth-led uprising has toppled a government whose power seemed impermeable. I have watched events from afar and felt a visceral need to write about what I was seeing and hearing. At Georgetown, Molly Inman teaches a course on human rights and/in humanitarian responses. Should they talk to each other? Do they? Over the past few days, I have found myself thinking back to the class, and while I don’t have any answers (sorry, Molly), I know the following: Neutrality in humanitarian assistance starts with humanitarians not being neutral to human suffering. Impartiality is not the same as empathy. Operational independence is not an excuse for us to demean and disregard the importance of local organisations. Humanitarian agencies can be (perhaps should be) apolitical, but to ask the same from humanitarians is absurd. These ideas are not new– many humanitarians feel it every day. More should probably speak about how they navigate it. There are, naturally, risks that need to be considered. If our colleagues have to pass through armed check posts to reach besieged villages, it would be foolish to 'name and shame' those holding the guns. When states commit egregious crimes against civilians, humanitarians are aware of the determinative legal classifications that apply, but often cannot use them because it is inextricably tied to access and the safety of colleagues. None of this is an excuse not to speak, but rather a challenge of how to speak, when, and to whom. For Bangladesh, for me, right now— not speaking up would feel like a betrayal to a country I am neither neutral nor impartial to, and an affront to the work I am building a career out of.

I am Khandaker Azizur Rahman, also known as AR Sumon, a Bangladesh-based photojournalist and professional documentary photographer with over 12 years of experience. I have conducted numerous photographic workshops.
In 2017, over 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar due to a brutal military crackdown in Rakhine State, involving mass killings, rape, and arson. This violence, deemed ethnic cleansing by the UN, targeted a stateless minority facing decades of discrimination and denial of citizenship. The resulting humanitarian crisis saw refugees in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh. Despite international condemnation, Myanmar's government denied the atrocities, blaming militant attacks for the violence. #RohingyaExodus #HumanRights #EthnicCleansing #RefugeeCrisis #MyanmarCrisis #UN #BangladeshRefugees #HumanitarianCrisis
