Is it a healthy boundary or resistance to embrace the uncomfortable? Boundaries are important, we learn to honor ourselves by being clear on what we need to thrive in the world, and communicating those needs unashamedly into the world. With healthly boundaries we advocate for ourselves from a place of love and care, "I matter", "my needs matter". And we do this skillfully without infringing on the rights of others. Boundaries help us feel safe in a world that increasingly feels unstable, the ecological crisis, the geopolitical insanity, the frantic pace of everyday lives, the complexity of the problems we face, the widespread trauma, the economic inequalities, the discrimination and fear. And so it becomes necessary to ask ourselves in which ways have we allowed our boundries to become armor for us, to prevent us from feeling vulnerable, from dealing with the reality of life that is unfolding in front of us. The reality that there is no real certainty we can grasp hold to. Life is a constant shift, the seasons show us this truth of nature, our bodies age and change, our perspectives mature and expand. I had often in the past held on to my boundries to protect myself, it's a very human thing to do. Until I realised that living fully is about giving space for the unknown to enter ones life. In the unknown is the possibility for magic, the possibility for something new to be born in you and through you. Creativity and freedom is housed in uncertainty and surrender not in the safety of the spaces we find comfort in. So now I live in the space between, the space where I can hold a boundary and advocate for my needs, while also allowing for the possibility that there is a wisdom greater than me that might be asking me to let go. An invitation to hold my boundries with more lightness and flexibility, that I might allow the play of magic and the wisdom of the interconnectedness that binds our journeys to enter into my life. Expectations—these silent architects of our frustrations. For so long, I lived by the blueprint of what I anticipated from others, from situations, and from life itself. Each unmet expectation was a brick in the wall of my discontent, each deviation a storm cloud in my sky. Have you ever heard the phrase “You make your plans and you hear God laughing?” About a decade ago, I was reeling from multiple levels of disruption at the personal and professional level all at once. During that time, as I dug deep in personal reflection and sought to recalibrate my life and leadership, I found myself being introduced to a Japanese Monk who was visiting Arizona. As I explained all the levels of disruption I was facing, he smiled and said, "When your love of life is so great, the structure that you have built for your life, up until this moment, must necessarily disintegrate. Life - and God - has a much bigger plan for you than have you conceived for yourself. Do not to be in a rush to fill the void. Your job right now is to say simply, 'thank you, what's next?' and to follow that calling." These words fed my soul at a time when there was so much uncertainty in my life. I then realized something that still guides me today: Disruption is always an invitation into courageously stepping into the unknown - where, maybe, something bigger wants to be born than anything we have ever conceived.
