We are saddened at the loss of eight community newspapers in Minnesota this month. Newspapers play a vital role in keeping the public informed about government actions and policies. As watchdogs of democracy, newspapers hold governments accountable and keep citizens empowered with knowledge. As government communicators, we stand in support of local newspapers. By collaborating with local journalists, we can support their work and keep our communities informed and engaged. https://lnkd.in/grQRz5C3 #SupportLocalJournalism #SupportLocalNews

We've seen this headline far too many times. Minnesota has lost 34% of our newspapers since 2005 and analysts project this trend to continue, per Axios Twin Cities (And we have it easy compared to other states!). Social media and the internet have fundamentally shifted how news is consumed and monetized, so we need to fundamentally rethink our approach to local news to engage younger readers and ensure they have access to authoritative and trustworthy information. The loss of 8 newspapers in Greater Minnesota is tragic. The Star Tribune is expanding outside the Twin Cities, but that won't replace the critical impact of community papers. Hear more from Reed Anfinson in today's Star Tribune about why this moment demands action. https://lnkd.in/gVVXTczJ

As the political rhetoric heats up, particularly on social media, please consider doing your own "fact checking" before sharing information. Here is a helpful page from U.C. Berkeley's Library with various sites to assist you. https://lnkd.in/dJkg_M5h Politifact Pulitzer Prize winning site run by editors and reporters from the Tampa Bay Times (Florida) newspaper. "PolitiFact is a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others who speak up in American politics.... The PolitiFact state sites are run by news organizations that have partnered with the Times." Read about their principles under 'About Us.' FactCheck.org"FactCheck.org is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania....a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. We monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases." OpenSecrets.org"Nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit, the Center for Responsive Politics is the nation's premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy." Fact Check (Washington Post)"The purpose of this Web site, and an accompanying column in the Sunday print edition of The Washington Post, is to “truth squad” the statements of political figures regarding issues of great importance, be they national, international or local." Snopes"The definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation." Duke Reporters' Lab: Fact CheckingIncludes a database of global fact-checking sites, which can be viewed as a map or as a list; also includes how they identify fact-checkers.

Few people pay attention to changes in the landscape of print media, because they don’t understand how fundamental accurate news is to the health of democracy. Rocky Kistner’s post about CA losing most of its DC reporters is important news. It isn’t just California - this change is happening everywhere as independent news organizations are cutting back or in some cases selling to companies with clear political agendas - such as the recent sale of the Baltimore Sun. Everyone is rightly worried about the impact of AI on news, and these types of changes in the news world leave gaping holes - a void that can be more easily filled by fake news. What do you do to fact check a piece of news when there are only a handful of reporters actually covering an issue? This is an incredibly important issue for the future of our country.
A blow to democracy: “the only journalists covering DC for California-based newspapers. That’s eight print reporters covering the entire federal government—for a state of thirty-nine million people.” @cam_joseph @CJR

When was the last time you tuned into your local news station? 📺 Or picked up a newspaper? 📰 Local news plays a crucial role in communities. It provides important information about immediate surroundings, such as local politics, weather forecasts, traffic conditions, and community events. Having access to this information makes it easier for community members to make informed decisions about daily life. Local outlets also cover stories that larger, national news outlets might ignore. Human interest stories, local sports coverage, and news about local businesses can foster a sense of shared identity and togetherness. Due to financial challenges, a lot of local news outlets have been disappearing at an alarming rate in recent years. They aren’t able to keep up and compete with larger, more well-known national outlets. Without the local news, however, residents will lose access to important information about their neighborhood, and local issues won’t get the attention they deserve. This could lead to lower levels of civic engagement, low political participation, and loss of community voices. Local news is the key to the health and vibrancy of our society, and its dying out is a serious issue that must be addressed. It’s important that we all understand the value of these outlets and support local journalism in whatever way we can. ❤️ The American Journalism Project offers an incredible list of articles and studies to further explore this topic: https://lnkd.in/eeXeaaVa #LocalNews #CivicEngagement #CommunityVoice

News organizations must focus on becoming essential utilities that provide the news communities need — while also building authentic relationships with their audiences. The good news is the opportunity to implement this model exists. It is just on us to innovate and do the work.
This study should be a wakeup call for all of us who want to make journalism better for communities. What we've been doing isn't working. We've got to reimagine local news that is useful, relevant, engaging and creates community connections. This is not a drill. It's important to note that the outlets that appear to have been part of the study were mainstream, legacy newspapers. I wonder what the results would have looked like for other types of organizations. https://lnkd.in/eGFGFbdX

Looking forward to moderating this Stanford University discussion on Jan. 29 featuring Leroy Chapman Jr. of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, LeeAnn Colacioppo of the Denver Post, and Julie Makinen of the SF Standard. The goal is to surface answers to some key questions: How do editors produce news that people across the political spectrum will trust? What changes are newsroom leaders making – or need to be made -- to restore respect for credible, fact-based news in this critical election year? https://lnkd.in/g2Qg38V3
