🔍 Optimizing the lubrication process for cotton flakes | Micro Case Study In the industrial process of treating cotton flakes, vegetable oil aids in the subsequent carding and combing phases. The oil is applied by spraying onto the cotton flakes as they are mixed and maneuvered with hot air from below, while also being lubricated from above via a spray atomizer. This mixing and atomization phase lasts for 20 minutes, followed by a settling period of another 20 minutes. ❔ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 The initial issue arose from using a high-flow atomizer, resulting in excessive lubrication. ❕ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 To address this problem, we introduced an atomizing spray nozzle equipped with a shut-off needle and adjusted the flow rate to suit the application. Is ash magnetic? In the dairy powder processing industry, another source of contamination can be the surface of the spray dryer. The gas burners on the dryer run so hot that the particles burn and create a burnt scale on the surface of the dryer. This scale is basically ash, and this particular ash is magnetic and can be removed by high intensity magnets! Injector testing for an upcoming liquid rocket engine, Little Blue! I used baking powder packed inside the showerhead injector to visualize gas dynamics exiting the orifices and mark the distance from the injector plate that diffusion/expansion effects begin to mix the gasses. Testing with an injector pressure of 35 psia, a close approximation to the pressure gradient predicted in real operation at design point estimated by GFSSP. The stagnation plate inside the central chamber yields a noticeable divot in the center of the exiting powder, causing a donut-like pressure distribution.
