Lots of good stuff in the new schools bill, especially the crackdown on shady private schools. But, if all teachers are now to have Qualified Teacher Status (or be working towards it), then the success of that policy will depend on more flexible routes for getting to QTS and support for schools. More schools and their children being attacked to save costs. The Ministry of Education is throwing Safety and children care under the buses not on them. In other situations the MoE is ignoring the children al together as their unapologetic drive for cost savings continues. Early data on school attendance suggests steeper fines for pupil absence have not had a “meaningful” impact, representatives from the school leaders’ union, NAHT, have said. The government hiked fines in September for unauthorised school absences, with the penalties for parents rising from £60 to £80. Latest Data on the levels of attendance and overall, authorised and unauthorised absence in state-funded primary, secondary and special schools. By school type, the absence rates across the academic year 2023/24 to date were: 5.4% in state-funded primary schools (3.9% authorised and 1.5% unauthorised) 8.9% in state-funded secondary schools (5.5% authorised and 3.4% unauthorised) 12.9% in state-funded special schools (9.7% authorised and 3.2% unauthorised) https://lnkd.in/e6nd4t8y
