Bytedance-owned short video platform TikTok is reportedly preparing to layoff around 1,000 employees from operations and marketing teams around the world, The Information reported. The report said the company plans to disband its global user operations team, which handles tasks like user support and communication. The clock is ticking for TikTok with a looming ban in the U.S. Unfortunately, the clock has already run out for more than 1,000 of its marketing and operations employees. For a company that generated $80 billion in revenues last year, the layoffs at high level make little sense. But when you consider 80% of those revenues came from the U.S., TikTok's move signals a number of possibilities - a possible push for international growth, a more desperate cost-cutting move with revenue expected to take a hit from the U.S. ban, or both. This TikTok challenge is formidable. While the platform is challenging the forced sale or ban order in court, a resolution could take time. Meanwhile, creators, whose livelihoods depend on TikTok, are fiercely opposing the potential ban. But any kind of drawn out conundrum could have creators looking for alternatives, which can only hurt TikTok. At a high level, the layoffs don't make sense. I would imagine PR and communications are impacted as well, and they come at a time when the company needs all the communications strategy it can get. On the other hand, with fears about its future in the U.S., TikTok may strategically be streamlining operations to invest more heavily in markets outside the U.S. and find other cash cows. Red flag warning with headwinds ahead flashes uncertainty. The other possibility is TikTok's move signals a potential shift towards cost-cutting measures. Despite high revenue now, profitability challenges or a financial downturn due to the ban or a creator exodus due to the uncertainty are likely raising flags internally. ByteDance holds a wild card. By forcing a sale, ByteDance may oblige, but remove the algorithms and targeting technology as part of the deal. That would essentially remove the platform's secret sauce, leaving a shell of a company that would in all likelihood have creators jumping ship. Whatever is behind the decision, the fallout is already a reality for the TikTok employees affected. Why I would be a great social media strategist for VALORANT Esports: 1) I built the collegiate social brands for three separate Esports teams for League of Legends, Overwatch, and Hearthstone (all while managing them solo). 2) As the Director of Content for the Atlanta Reign Overwatch team, I oversaw all socials for the team's second season of Overwatch League 3) At SteelSeries I managed the brand strategy that all regional accounts followed for product launches and activations. My job was to post on the main global account (1+million followers) and to help regional accounts grown their followings. 4) I grew social accounts for a Mark Cuban start-up including a real-time virtual influencer who was a gamer who garnered 400,000+ followers in our first 6 months of strategy.
