❓ Are your runner extensions and dirt traps actually trapping anything❓ In this video a traditional runner extension and two different dirt traps are shown using tracer particles with densities similar to undesirable elements that make their way into our gating systems like sand particles, slag and inclusions. Using this result it is easy to see which dirt trap is actually doing what it was designed to do: trap the garbage that we don’t want in our castings. The end result of a dirt trap that is working properly? Reduced defects, lower scrap rates and lower overall costs.
Suppose it also depends on the velocity of the flow and where the ingates are placed and what shape / size they are in relation to the runner bar.
Is your metal clean? The easiest way to verify if the dirt trap works is by vertically section cut it and analyze the type of entrapped inclusions. Adding a vent at the top of it will help eliminate the gases too. The first benefit of the extended dirt trap is reducing the initial velocity impact of the Liquid Metal filling the mold. I agree with Mark Sutton.
I'd like to see a simulation with a spinner gate. Is there one?
