At STRACC Design, we believe that lifting instructions, rigging calculations, and FEA analysis should be developed together to ensure consistency and clarity. Today, we are sharing two methods to calculate lifting forces as a ratio from the total weight (partition factor) in chains or slings: 1️⃣ Beam Approach: This method uses both distances and angles. It assumes that the lifting points are on the same level, meaning one lifting point must be projected to match the height of the other. This can add unnecessary complexity and extra information to the lifting instructions. 2️⃣ Horizontal/Vertical Force Balance: This method uses only angles and saves extra steps and information when the lifting points are not leveled. 🏗️ Base Plate Deformation Conventional approaches for steel-to-concrete connection calculation generally assume that the anchor base plate does not deform. Load distribution is simplified such that deformations are linearly distributed across the surface of the base plate. But does the base plate always behave according to these assumptions? 🤔 🖥️ Let's test this in the #RFEM program from #DlubalSoftware. This program provides tools to simulate and design steel-to-concrete connections using a numerical FEA model. The reference example will be the connection of an HEB 200 column to a base plate anchored with four M24 anchors. We will compare two base plates with different thicknesses: 1️⃣ Rigid (40 mm) 2️⃣ Flexible (15 mm) 👉 Bending: In the case of a flexible base plate, the distribution of contact stress leads to a reduction in the lever arm. The base plate corners near the tensioned anchors become compressed against the concrete, which induces additional prying forces. As a result, the tensile force in the anchors increases compared to the rigid base plate version. 👉 Compression: From the contact stress distribution image, it is evident that for the flexible base plate, the concentration of contact stress around the profile projection results in higher values than in the case of the rigid base plate. 👉 Tension: Similar to the bending case, a flexible base plate can generate compressive contact stress in the corners, causing the formation of prying forces. Although this effect is not as pronounced in the studied example, the contact stress distribution and anchor force values clearly show its occurrence. 📝 Modeling steel-to-concrete connections using numerical FEA models provides a realistic simulation of the base plate behavior based on its rigidity. Besides providing a more accurate determination of the contact stress distribution in the base plate and the tensile forces in the anchors, it is possible to simulate rotation in the anchor base plate. Simple examples often help us to understand the relationships in a #diecasting process or part. The following rib structures were analysed against bending and torsion. The weights of the parts are the same (+/- 2%) and the directional deformation is indicated with the same scale. The results of the mechanical simulations show that the base body already has a high moment of resistance to bending. Nevertheless, the rib structure can contribute to optimisation. For the bending load case, the following order is established: 1. D, 2. E, 3. I, ... 9. A In the torsion load case, a great deal depends on the rib structure. The best results are achieved with intersecting ribs. The following ranking has been established: 1. C, 2. B, 3. I, ... 9. A In addition to maximising rigidity, rib structures should also enable a stable manufacturing process and high quality parts. 2/3: Remember I told you: “Young's modulus actually measures the materials resistance to deform elastically”? I lied! 😥 ➝ It’s not that simple. 😉 Take the example of this I-Beam. Intuitively I can tell that the same I-Beam in option “A” will be stiffer than in option “B” It’s true that same cross-sections can be much more efficient at resisting bending than others. Reason? ➝ The further the material is spread from the bending axis, the stiffer a cross-section tends to be. Option-A has more material located far from the bending axis than the one in option-B and so is better at resisting bending, even though both cross-sections have the same area. ➝ So, deformation also depends on how the steel profile is oriented. Bevel gear pairs are used to transmit motion between shafts angled to each other. In general, the bevel #gears are designed with straight or spiral teeth. Hypoid gear pairs are used to transmit motion between shafts angled to each other with axial offset. The toothing of the bevel gears can be designed as spherical involute or octoidal toothing. Although the latter does not have a flat meshing plane between the tooth flanks, it can be described by a trapezoidal reference profile on the crown gear of the gearing, comparable to involute gearing for cylindrical gears. The path of action of the octoidal toothing running on the spherical surface corresponds to an eight-shaped curve. The shape of the tooth trace depends primarily on the cutting process selected for the bevel gear teeth. For an energy-efficient and wear-resistant design of bevel gears, knowledge of the tribological parameters in tooth flank contact is required.
