Train Education for Nature Program (EFN) invites applications from aspiring and experienced researchers, practitioners, and leaders to pursue graduate-level studies (master’s and PhD) geared towards research that cultivates a better understanding of the place-based nature of food systems and transformation. BEC PhD student Mohammed Mahdi about his work in the Uprise Food Safety Project UP-RISE is a Horizon Europe project that will provide new knowledge for understanding mycotoxin contamination in the informal sector, prediction of mycotoxin contamination, improving risk assessment tools to strengthen regulatory frameworks, and developing innovative tools for reducing mycotoxin contamination in fermented food value chains, thereby aiming for safe food systems for all. https://lnkd.in/gF-haBF2

🌍 Empowering Africa’s Future through Sustainable Food Systems and Data Science! 🌱 Exciting news from the University of Pretoria ! We’re proud to announce UP's co-leadership in UKUDLA, the newly established African-German Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems and Applied Agricultural and Food Data Science. This transformative project is a collaboration with the University of Hohenheim (Germany), University of the Western Cape, University of Mpumalanga, and LUANAR-Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. 🌾 What is UKUDLA About? Named after the Nguni word for “food,” UKUDLA aims to make a profound impact on food security across Africa. With €6.5 million in funding, we’re set to revolutionise food systems through research, training, and data-driven solutions. Here’s how: 1️⃣ Graduate Centre: UP will lead this hub, training future leaders in food systems analysis and data science, bridging the gap between technology and agriculture. 2️⃣ Regional Impact: UKUDLA will serve as a policy and knowledge resource for the Southern African Development Community (SADC), ensuring that our research directly addresses community needs. 3️⃣ Cross-Continental Collaboration: By fostering partnerships through existing initiatives, such as the Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence in Sustainable Food Systems (CoRE-SFS) - co-led by UP, we’re creating a global network of experts dedicated to resilient and inclusive food systems. 🚀 Launching January 2025: UKUDLA is set to lead sustainable food solutions, empowering the next generation of scientists to address Africa’s complex food challenges. We’re proud to share that our chairholder, Prof. Spencer M., has been awarded the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert funding to advance food system transformation efforts through the innovative lens of social network sciences. With a focus on West and Central African food systems, Prof. Moore’s work emphasizes that sustainable food security isn’t just about introducing new technologies or crops - it’s about fostering meaningful, community-centered change. Through this project, Prof. Moore will collaborate with colleagues at CGIAR and in the Netherlands to develop a simulation tool aimed at evaluating various intervention strategies. This approach places health equity and social justice at the heart of food systems transformation, ensuring that new practices are not only effective but also socially relevant and inclusive for the communities they serve. We look forward to seeing the impact of this project and the strides it will make toward building resilient, equitable food systems for all.
