When Dreams Hit the Pavement: My European Bike Tour Reality Check 🚴♂️🌧️ Have you ever envisioned a picturesque bike tour through Europe, only to have reality deliver a harsh wake-up call? Here's a story about the highs and lows of a journey that tested my limits and reshaped my understanding of adventure. Back in 2009, I embarked on what I believed would be a dream bike tour across Europe. Armed with an oversized bike and a one-wheel trailer, I set off with visions of cozy cafes and scenic rides. The reality, however, was far less glamorous. 🚴♂️ Navigating through France, I quickly realized the "white space" between those Instagram-perfect moments. From illegally riding on motorways to enduring long, cold nights in a hammock tent, the journey was a far cry from the idyllic adventure I had imagined. 😔🌧️ A glimmer of hope appeared in Dijon, where a kind couple offered warmth and hospitality, reminding me of the human connection that travel often brings. Yet, the relentless fatigue and isolation soon returned as I pedaled through Burgundy, my spirits wavering with each passing mile. 🍷🚴♀️ Takeaways: This journey taught me the invaluable lesson of preparation and realistic expectations. While romantic notions can inspire us, understanding the gritty realities ensures we are truly ready for the challenges ahead. Sometimes, comfort and safety should take precedence over the allure of adventure. Dreaming of a European bike tour? Plan thoroughly, embrace creature comforts, and always have a backup plan. Your adventure will be all the richer for it. 🌍✈️ #Travel #Expat #Expatlife #AmericansAbroad #TravelTales #CultureClash #Cycling #EuropeCyclingTour #LinkedInStories #TravelPlanning #TravelAdventure Curious about the full story? Just a short plane ride from Copenhagen in Haarlem, Holland I’m struck by a remarkable difference in the biking culture between two of the world’s notoriously busiest biking countries 🇳🇱🚲🇩🇰🚲 Yes, bikes everywhere was not a surprise. I’m in Holland - the only country with more bikes per capita than Denmark (I think). But that’s not it. It’s the biking culture here. It’s different than in Denmark/Copenhagen. All kinds of bikes, fast e-bikes, bikes with kids on swirling in and out between pedestrians, kids on front and back of their parents bikes, many friends on the same bike racing round the corners … it’s lively, relaxed and fun to watch. But no one is wearing bike helmets ⛑️ … no one. Not the kids, not the young and not the adults. It surprises me because it’s such an integral part of Danish biking culture… And I’m bike-biased enough to think that a country like Holland must have the same biking culture as we do in Denmark … 🫣 But no…and I wonder why and what that might say about other cultural differences between Denmark and Holland? Tomorrow I’m gonna ask my Dutch colleagues what’s up with the (reckless) biking in Haarlem 😅 … (stay curious - don’t judge 🫣) What’s your take on this ? #culturalbias #interculturalcompetencies #bikeculture 🌏 🌏 🌏 🌏 🌏 🌏 🌏 🌏 If this post inspired you make sure to like, comment and share 💯 Hit the 🔔 to get notified when I share thoughts and news about my work and news in Expat Hero With gratitude, Nanna Hauch

I love exploring new places on two feet or two wheels, even better if it's a long-distance adventure with overnight stays. Some of my favourite holidays have been doing exactly that - bikepacking in the Outer Hebrides, walking the West Highland Way, and e-bike touring in Portugal's Douro Valley. My trusty mountain bike has been there for bikepacking adventures but I've been looking for a different, more specific bike for a long time. One with tons of rack mounts to load up and take on an adventure. As a short person, it's hasn't been easy. The bikes that interested me didn't tend to come in a small enough size. But, eventually, I did find exactly what I was looking for - and I learned tons about choice and tradeoff's along the way. The latest blog post on my outdoor website is about the best bikepacking bike for small riders. It includes helpful tips about things to consider when choosing a new bike, relevant for cyclists of all sizes. Check it out at outdoor-girl.com

How can we support sustainable tourism practices? There are many ways we can prioritise improvements and normalise sustainable choices. One way is helping our users find new experiences and deals, using sustainable travel. Like cycling. Denmark is well known for our safe bicycle traffic and with spring in full effect, now is the perfect time to use one. Here is an inspiring from visit danmark, about just that, and what exciting biking experiences there are to explore. https://lnkd.in/ebW6MXX9

Here are some stats from my incredible trip to Gothenburg🇸🇪: Total Distance Covered: 128 km (53 km cycling🚴, 75 km walking🚶) Sauna Sessions: 5 sessions, 20 minutes each 🧖 Workouts: 3 sessions wherever I could find a pull-up bar - in parks, on the streets, by the coast: ✔️150 pull-ups 🏋️♂️ ✔️1,420 push-ups 👊 ✔️19 minutes total planking 🧘♂️ Despite my ACL tear, I managed to stay incredibly active. On my last day, my knee started acting up, but it didn't stop me from making the most of my trip. This experience shows how much you can change up your travel routine and stay fit, no matter the circumstances. Here's a quick recap of my routine: ✔️Cycling: Over 50 km in one day, exploring the city from a new perspective ✔️Walking: 15 km+ daily, always on the move ✔️Sleep: Just 5 hours a night – I believe in making the most of my time abroad I avoid public transportation and taxis as much as possible, preferring to wander around and discover non-touristy spots. I enjoy exploring different streets at night, meeting locals, and experiencing the nightlife. Staying up late and having a great night out is part of the adventure, but I never sleep past 10 AM. Are you an early bird or a night owl when traveling? And do you stay fit while abroad? 🤔 PS: Add Sweden to your travel list – it's an absolutely beautiful country. 🇸🇪 PPS: Don't miss Gothenburg! This incredibly beautiful coastal city has so much to offer. 🌟 #traveler #gothenburg #sweden #physicalactivity #fitness #explorer #cycling #walking #whileabroad

I dont like to compare adventures, challenges. They are all so different. Also, there is a depth in each experience that is difficult to share and understand. An adventure is more then only a distance and a certain time. Those things can be very superficial. Instead you have this vast experience. For instance 👇 🚪 START: Gothenburg. Then ferry 4h to Fredrikshamn. Bike about 170K to Århus. On that stage, I slept in my bivybag, 4h, I also ended up having to bike around a river, and needed to plan a new GPS route. Plus, biking between say 00.00 - 02.30 AM was difficult. The thick mist made it almost impossible to see the road, while it was also freezing. Still, when I got closer to the ocean at times, warm air poured in, creating a big contrast of air temp. In the morning it was freezing, around 12 degrees, and very humid. I stopped when I had to, essentially for coffee or food. Always doing something. Staying active. END: stage 1 🚪 in Århus. I ask myself, how can I share this experience? How can I share the experience of having a full moon 🌕 late at night, with no traffic, only me on a never ending road? In Denmark 🇩🇰 I made an effort, check out the full video on my Youtube channel, 1h 🍿🎬📽️ Link https://lnkd.in/d3SXkz5P 🔥⚔️ Stay strong Erik #primalmovement #endurance #endurancetraining #ultracycling #bikepacking #mentalstrength #kattegattleden @kattegattleden

Meet Filipe, the bike guide who took me for a spin around Ria Formosa National Park. Filipe is a legend. An ex-BMXer who’s had 8 knee surgeries who now spends his days guiding, mountain biking, and building trail hikes. So, why am I telling you about Filipe? Because he taught me a valuable business lesson. From the moment I met him, I knew the tour would be fun. He was such a happy chap—someone who lifts the energy of everyone around him. After the tour, Filipe asked for feedback. I told him I’d had a great time! I like to do my due diligence with activities and restaurants when I’m on holiday to make sure I don’t get absolutely Brit-abroaded! Filipe’s tour had great reviews—in fact they were the best reviews for all the bike tours in this region of the Algarve (and there’s a lot of them). Yet he was charging a pretty low price for what he was offering. So, I asked him, “Have you thought about charging more?” His answer was gold: “I charge low prices and make sure I exceed expectations. I do what I love, and I help people have a great time.” He continued— “Some charge high prices and think they’re winning. But people don’t come back! I have people come back. And I get great reviews, which brings more and more people!” Filipe reminded me that true success isn’t about short-term wins and offering bad value for money. It’s about building relationships, creating experiences people return for, and earning raving reviews. What do you think? If you were Filipe, would you raise your prices or set lower prices than competitors and focus on exceeding expectations?

Today is #BicycleDay, a perfect occasion to celebrate the joy and health benefits of biking. We often hear about the Netherlands and their biking culture, which is indeed inspiring. However, I would also spotlight Copenhagen and Malmö, two cities where biking is a way of life. But most of all, today I want to give a huge shout-out to the brave bikers in #Albania. In a place where bike lanes are often invaded and disrespected, and bikers are sometimes seen as people who can't afford cars :) I am still amazed that you still see individuals pedal on, demonstrating that biking is a viable and valuable mode of transport. Their perseverance is inspiring, showing that with dedication, it's possible to create a biking culture anywhere. Biking is more than just a mode of #transportation; it's a pathway to better health. Regular cycling helps improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles, reduces stress, boosts mental well-being, and lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers, leading to healthier, happier lives. It is a good and smart choice, not only for reducing air pollution (#Tirana has one of the worst quality air in Europe), the carbon footprint and all the bllaaa-blaaaa-sustainability-bbllaaa-bllaa-I-dont-care, but because by bike you can beat all the benz Mercedes that (#Tirana has more than Germany) is stuck in the traffic congestion. So, on this Bicycle Day, let's celebrate all bikers, from the bustling streets of Copenhagen and Amsterdam to the determined ones in Albania. Keep pedaling, and know that your journey is making a difference. #BicycleDay #BikeLife #SustainableTransport #CleanAir
