Over the past decade, the Alentejo has become one of the most popular cycling destinations in Europe. The vast province makes up more than 20% of Portugal, but the reasons cyclists are heading there are many. The people are friendly and welcoming, new hotels and inns have opened across the Alentejo, the food is sublime, and the range of landscapes is impressive. But the building of new highways over the last decades has taken traffic off of older EN roads. These classic roads are often well paved, straight as an arrow, and well shaded by trees. While the Alentejo is far from flat, the vast region is mostly plains and cork forests, punctuated by olive groves, wine fields and fields of sunflowers. The rolling, open landscape, mixed with a small population of about a half million people living in a space the size of Belgium, make the Alentejo the perfect cycling destination. https://lnkd.in/dfhDE6d

🚴♂️🌍 Cycling to Manchester: A Journey of Gratitude This week, I wrapped up my presentation on "Sustainability solutions in sports nutrition" at International Sport and Exercise Nutrition Conference in Manchester with this final slide. What made this conference trip extra memorable was the way I traveled: cycling from home through the beautiful Dutch and UK countryside. It was an unusual, yet rewarding choice that reminded me how fortunate I am to have “checked the boxes” to make this possible: ✅ Time: Taking four extra days off isn’t easy, but I’m in a situation where I could afford to make it work. I’m grateful for the support of Roos, who managed things at home with Dorian while I was away, something I don’t take for granted. ✅ Money: Surprisingly, the low-carbon option (ferry + bike) costs at least twice as much as flying. I feel privileged to be in a position where I could choose the greener path, even at a higher cost. ✅ Health & Fitness: Cycling more than 100 miles in a day, with luggage, through a strong headwind all day and the hills in the Peak District in the dark, required good health and fitness. I’m grateful to have both. ✅ Gear: I try to spend as little on “stuff” as I can, but cycling gear is still an exception. Riding in the rain of an English December was bearable because of it. I appreciate these tools that make adventures like this possible. ✅ Courage: Perhaps the most significant box: the courage to do things different. This trip reminded me how rewarding it is to step off the beaten path. With all these boxes checked, I can’t help but feel privileged. While cycling may not be for everyone, I hope to inspire others to explore alternatives to flying—and feel empowered to embrace them. Sustainability can be fun and adventurous.
