Lonely Planet 💬 #Lithuania is the unsung star of the #Baltics. With a wealth of baroque and art deco architecture, sobering relics of a Soviet past, a thriving, ever-evolving dining scene and ample natural attractions, the country delivers something for every traveler. Its rich history goes back millennia – and in spite its ever-changing borders over the years, including by its forcible incorporation into the USSR, Lithuania 🇱🇹 has always managed to hold true to its language, culture and national character. Even today, traditional villages, where crops are still gathered by hand and artisans practice crafts honed over centuries, thrive alongside cosmopolitan cities. Lithuania’s dense forests 🌲 attract numerous foragers, while the Baltic Sea draws sun worshippers to the amber-speckled coast.

Read an interesting article of my colleague Katarina Stanik, who recently visited the most authentic region of Slovakia Orava a good idea for a day trip also for those who staying in High/ Low Tatras or in a polish resort Zakopane. In article are mentioned the highlights of the region, but not all of them. E.g. bath in thermal water in Oravice is missing. Anyway great job Katarina Stanik, kudos to you https://lnkd.in/eN_T2she #slovakia #travel #travel_blog

Apart from its beautiful natural landscapes, Rio de Janeiro’s revitalisation of its city’s waterfront downtown area stands out for its delightful 3.5 km promenade of bike lanes and green spaces, anchored by cultural and architectural landmarks such as the Museum of Tomorrow. Awarded the 2024 Lee Kuan Yew #WorldCityPrize, Rio inspires cities to keep growing and improving with boldness and creativity. Initiated in 2009, leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games, the transformation of the Porto Maravilla area has redefined its downtown, moving away from decades of being mono-functional. A pivotal moment is its 2013 removal of its Perimetral Elevated Highway, making way for more walkable streets and engaging public spaces. Its other efforts include introducing its first low emission district in 2019, helping to improve air quality and create a more sustainable city. This includes an extensive cycling network and vegetation cover, features that could be adapted for other parts of the city. Rio’s commitment to sustainability extends to preserving its heritage. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its Valongo Wharf archaeological site was the landing area for enslaved Africans reaching South America and serves as a reminder of the city’s history. Damien Woon, Senior Planner, part of the Prize secretariat team, shares highlights of his experience visiting Rio. 🏯✨ Hoi An’s Pagoda Bridge: A Blend of Heritage and Modernity Sparks Dialogue ✨🏯 The recent renovation of Hoi An’s iconic Pagoda Bridge has sparked diverse reactions, highlighting the delicate balance between preserving heritage and embracing modernization. As someone deeply entrenched in the hospitality and marketing industry in Vietnam, I see this as a fascinating case study in cultural preservation and innovation. The mixed reactions to the bridge’s new look underscore a broader conversation about how we approach heritage sites in rapidly evolving landscapes. While some appreciate the fresh aesthetics and necessary structural improvements, others mourn the loss of traditional elements that have long defined the bridge’s charm. In my opinion, here are some key considerations around this case: 1. Cultural Integrity vs. Modern Needs and/or Safety: How can we ensure that modernization efforts respect and preserve the cultural essence of historical landmarks? 2. Community Engagement: What role should local communities play in decision-making processes regarding renovations of culturally significant sites? 3. Tourism Impact: How do changes to iconic sites influence tourism, and how can we balance attracting visitors with maintaining authenticity? This debate presents an opportunity for us in the hospitality industry to reflect on our own practices. It’s a reminder of the importance of involving stakeholders at all levels — from local communities to global travelers — in conversations about cultural preservation. As we develop and promote luxury experiences, we must strive to honor the rich heritage of our locations while thoughtfully integrating modern conveniences and aesthetics. #CulturalPreservation #Hospitality #SustainableTourism #VietnamTravel
