This is an incredibly useful data story from the ITS JPO about an issue every single one of us has encountered- how bad weather impacts safe driving. The good news is that this story also details all the readily available #ITS solutions to combat this problem. I can vividly recall two terrifying incidents in my college years driving to and in upstate New York. Once was getting stuck in a whiteout on the NY Thruway, by far the scariest experience and I was lucky to get home safely. Another was having to pull over on the highway near Scranton, PA due to such heavy fog I could not see even a few feet in front of me. Unfortunately during those times, cell phones didn’t exist, navigation apps weren’t a thing, and it was much harder to notify drivers of weather hazards in real time. Now we have the technology and tools to provide drivers with critical information before they enter dangerous conditions. V2X, Road Weather Informaton Systems, Variable Speed Limits, Traveler Information Messages and more ITS tools allow us to put information into the hands of the traveling public exactly when they need it most. And- if you read the story, you will see that the cost of doing so is a fraction of typical transportation investments. #ITS investments are smart investments. #THISisITS Brian Cronin Marcia Pincus
