In 2017, we found out that our 1 year old had extremely high levels of lead in his blood. At the time, the 'action level' was 10 and he was at 25. Over the next couple of months, we learned a lot about the dangers of lead exposure. We were fortunate to be able to move out of the apartment we were in, but I kept thinking to myself: what about the families who don't have that ability?
Coincidentally, there was already a bill at the state house, SB247, that would strenghten the lead laws in NH. Once we were settled, my partner and I did some advocacy work for the bill and to raise awareness in general. I did the writing and my partner did the public speaking. But one day, we were asked to speak at a Governor's press conference and my partner wasn't available. SO I DID IT. This photo is from that day!
Anyway, SB 247 was enacted in 2018 and brought several changes to the state’s lead law, including the addition of RSA 130-A:5-d, which recently went into effect on July 1, 2024. This section of the law mandates a Lead-Safe Certificate issued by a licensed NH Risk Assessor for NH properties that were built before 1978 and newly converted into rental housing after July 1, 2024. So many homes in NH were built before the 1978 outlawing of lead paint. And so many people don't realize that it's still a real issue. It's not just about peeling paint - lead paint dust is created where there are abrasions, like doors and windows opening and closing. That dust is very fine and covers everything without you even realizing. When you have babies - they put everything in their mouths, therefore ingesting it.
Children 6 and under are most at risk for the adverse effects of lead because their brains are still developing and lead can cause permanent issues. So in addition to being aware of lead paint exposure, make sure to have your children tested for lead levels in their blood at their annual wellness visit.
PS: My baby is now almost 8 years old, and he's doing great!
