That’s a wrap on LUXEPACK Monaco 2024! It being Luxe Pack’s flagship event and Monaco of course being Monaco, it certainly exceeded our expectations in terms of scale and ostentation. Despite this, sustainability was a central theme this year (some said more so than previous years), as was the need to comply with increasingly stringent regulations in Europe, the relentless focus on meeting consumers’ needs and expectations, and the role of innovation in addressing all these issues. We were encouraged by the number of brands and producers that expressed an intrinsic motivation to ‘do the right thing’ by adopting more sustainable policies and practices. Consumer demands and legislation are definitely helping drive change, but businesses are also increasingly recognizing their responsibility in ensuring a livable planet for us all. How far they’re willing to go is yet to be seen, especially in the hyper-competitive beauty & personal care sectors. But I am hopeful that the positive conversations we had with some of the sector’s biggest and most influential players result in tangible actions to get Ancient and Endangered Forests out of beauty packaging and to bring the low carbon, Next Gen solutions of the future to scale for the benefit of all. Delighted to share that in the last 12 months we have reduced any plastic derivative business by another 50% and now only represents less than 0.5% of our revenue… We will not take on any new plastic derivative business, at all, no matter how big a commercial opportunity it represents..!! In the last term at Luxury Connect Business School, we have started delving into the fascinating subject of "Sustainable Luxury," exploring the correlation between sustainability and luxury brands. As part of a generation committed to taking rational steps to preserve resources for future generations, this subject intrigued me to dig deeper and understand how luxury brands are adopting sustainability initiatives. One frequently discussed and impressive case study in our class is "Stella McCartney" Some notable concepts and initiatives by Stella McCartney highlight the growing importance of sustainability for luxury professionals and even upcoming professionals entering the industry: Circular Economy: Emphasizing the need to move away from finite (non-renewable) resources and design waste out of the system. ECONYL®: Utilizing an innovative technology that turns nylon waste into first-grade nylon yarn, providing the same quality as virgin nylon. This material can be recycled infinitely, making it truly circular. Regenerative Farming: Preserving the farm's natural ecosystem by ensuring no toxic substances are used. Sustainable Sourcing: Ensuring that viscose is sourced in a way that protects and enriches forests. Stella McCartney is one of the only brands that can trace their viscose back to the tree it came from. There are so many more exciting initiatives as you go deep into it! The transparency and dedication in Stella McCartney's brand operations are truly eye-opening. Our professor, Shefali Judeline Jauhar ma'am, has encouraged us to dig deeper into these topics, fostering more informed & aware conversations even when we're initially unaware. 💬 Exciting times at LUXEPACK Monaco! I had the honor of joining a panel with Marianne Mensah Soulez Lariviere, Benjamin Cohen Alain Pierron and our fantastic moderator Gerald Martines Together, we explored and discussed the future of biodegradable and compostable #packaging in the luxury industry. ✨ My Key insights from the panel: ♻️Regulations need to catch up with biodegradable materials—they are key to defossilation and decarbonization, but without clear guidance, the path forward remains tricky. ♻️While paper-based materials are thriving, foils and injection materials are underutilized despite their availability. The system isn’t ready to support start-ups that offer innovative, eco-friendly solutions. 🚀 ♻️Consumers, especially younger generations, want to move away from plastics. They’re expecting packaging that’s easy to recycle or compost, but current solutions aren’t enough. We need to push for clear definitions, better regulations, infrastructure and education on sorting and composting.
