Thanks, Jonathan Rowland & Cement Products Magazine, for a great article about the future of an electrified and clean cement sector. 🙏 #cement #electrification #decarbonization
In the latest issue of Cement Products Magazine, I take a look at some emerging technologies for the electrification of #cement production. The cast list included Coolbrook's RotoDynamic Heater, SaltX Technology's Electric Arc Calciner, and the Cambridge Electric Cement process. I also spoke to Prof. Narayanan Neithalath at Arizona State about the EPIXC research project and asked how the LEILAC - Low Emissions Intensity Lime and Cement consortium project could support electrification. The bottom line: There are several potential technologies out there and interest in them is growing. How great a role #electrification will ultimately play in cement's #decarbonization efforts is still uncertain - not least because it will require a sufficient quantity of low-carbon, low-cost electricity and enough grid capacity to handle the increased loads associated with industrial electrification.

🎉 Major success in the #catch4climate research project - the kiln has finally been installed in the first plant to use the polysius® pure oxyfuel process. In 2019, four European cement manufacturers founded the research company CI4C to realize the #catch4climate CO2 capture project on the site of the SCHWENK cement plant in Mergelstetten, where the kiln has now been successfully transported. 🌱 🚢 On March 7, after an exciting journey by barge and truck from Hamm to the construction site, the 31 meter long and 115 ton heavy kiln finally reached it's destination. There it was lifted and docked into the stationary kiln inlet housing. The plant is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2025. 👉 Read more about the kiln's exciting journey and the catch4climate project in our INSIGHTS magazine: https://lnkd.in/enTvztzs #cement #cementindustry #polysius #grey2green #DecarbonTechnologies

Have you ever wondered how the cement industry can meet the global demand for construction while significantly reducing its carbon footprint? The latest study from the Leilac-2 project outlines a viable pathway to sustainable cement production. The Leilac technology presents a low-cost, retrofittable solution that captures unavoidable process CO2 emissions from cement and lime production. This ground-breaking study demonstrates the feasibility and economic viability of implementing the Leilac technology at full scale to a cement plant in central Europe. Key Highlights: ▪️ Retrofitting the Leilac technology at a typical existing European cement plant can capture 590,000 tonnes of CO2 annually at a cost of ~€33/tonne, excluding transport and storage. ▪️ The study forecasts a cost-effective capture solution, with CO2 valued at ~€53 million per year captured for a cost of €20 million, excluding transport and storage. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The flexibility, minimal downtime for installation, and future-proof fuel options outlined in the study illustrate a clear path to near-zero emissions cement production. Are you ready to delve deeper into this transformative approach? Join the conversation and explore the full study. https://lnkd.in/g4jq24Zn #Sustainability #Innovation #CementIndustry #CCUS #Leilac

Turning kilns upside down to decarbonize lime calcination? Cement is responsible for around 8% of greenhouse gas emissions, with approximately 75% of its emissions stemming from the calcination of limestone into lime. Of these emissions, around two-thirds stem directly from the calcination process of limestone, while energy demand accounts for roughly a third. In the quest to decarbonize lime production, innovative approaches across calcination processes and energy usage are needed to overcome technical complexities while navigating economic factors such as low profit margins, capital intensity, long asset life, and trade exposure. One project venturing into this realm is the US-based startup Furno Materials, which recently raised a $6.5 million seed round to develop modular kilns. These kilns are targeted to be cheaper to build and use less energy than conventional massive kilns. Furno's kiln aims to reduce emissions from fossil fuels by 70% or more. It achieves this by turning the kiln vertical, filling it with ingredients ground to prescribed dimensions, and then seeping through it a combustive gas (natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen) and setting it ablaze. Deepsense is a science and technology expert network enhancing how decision-makers approach critical technical assessments. We have experts from leading institutions in lime calcination ready for consultation. → Reach out to us via info@deepsense.network. #cement #kilns #climatetech #deeptech #vc #expertnetwork #duediligence
