Volleyball is Easy to Love
Volleyball is entertaining whether unskilled or proficient! Watching the awkward plays and movements of a body that is unskilled is equally entertaining as watching professionals.
1. Volleyball skills are entirely unnatural.
- If I asked you to slap a sweaty butt, wipe your face, and high five a stranger on the street, you would never do it. Throw in some spandex and a volleyball, no problem!
- If I asked you to dive across the air and belly flop on the sidewalk, the answer would be “WHAAAA?” But if I threw a volleyball across the road, “MINE!!!”
2. Mental Challenges
- The requirements to see things above, below and beside you at all times while moving, communicating and performing a skill, make the game ever engaging and appealing.
3. Longevity
- Most team sports have contact forces, or larger distances between them, making it difficult to play those sports when you’re older.
4. Marriage practice
- #Tennis doubles is similar to beach volleyball, but only one atmosphere lets you dress up in costumes and bikinis and use noise makers during the serve. And they haven’t let doubles pass to each other to spike it. Maybe one day! (USTA) United States Tennis Association next project?
- The indoor court is so small relative to having six players that extreme closeness and communication is required.
- The social dynamics lend to life long friendships or intense breakups - very good practice for marriages.
5. Low Cost and Access
- You don’t need much equipment, you can play volleyball even if you can’t jump or run; you can play one-armed, seated, in a chair or in the basement, and you can even make up games like the Harlem Globetrotters. You can play with your feet in Brazil!
6. Self Reflection
- It’s a game without humans tackling you, or trying to steal something from you. So you are left with your own thoughts and feelings between and during each play.
7. Beginners Succeed
- There is often no strategy required at the beginner levels. Proficiency and consistency always win. So, at the early stages of learning, physicality and size are less important. This lends to focussing on true skill development.
8. Adaptability
- You have to mentally swap between making your teammates’ lives easier and your opponents’ lives more difficult within each play. The quick alternation of the mindset is a unique sporting dynamic making players adaptable for life.
9. Personal Growth
- The game reveals fears, desires and social preferences exposing your nature, and the least developed parts of your body, skills, and mind.
10. Relative Safety
- It’s scary when a ball is flying at your head, but the ball is big enough to be seen, soft enough to prevent contusions, and getting a concussion is more likely from crashing into a teammate than from a ball to the head. Maybe. But it’s all worth it!
