On view at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum through August 10, 2025, Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial features twenty-five new site-specific commissions exploring design's role in relation to the diverse definitions and experiences of home across the U.S., U.S. territories, and tribal nations. Maharam is proud to provide material support for the Triennial including forthcoming textile Grange Basket woven with a blend of recycled contents for slipcovers as part of the exhibition design by architects Johnston Marklee, as well as for an exhibition by PIN-UP that reimagines the Carnegie bedroom as a contemporary screening room featuring a central bed and curtain in textile Tune alongside a documentary that chronicles daily life across three LGBTQIA+ communal living structures serving as rural and suburban sanctuaries. https://lnkd.in/eQGcyz4f Installation image of “Dream Homes” by PIN–UP (Elliot Goldstein © Smithsonian Institution) in "Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial" at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

An Architects point of View: the Larwill Park site is an unprecedented opportunity to create a larger cultural footprint that an underground expanse or Hudson Bay renovated interior will never provide. One that will be worth combining with a multi use performing arts site. I agree with Michael Audain. An underground expanse is “sunk” costs, and one that is much more expensive to foot, not easy to pull off, and hidden from view. The decision to go underground by IM Pei was controversial precisely because of this but his decision, while making sense for the Louvre, does not make sense for the VAG, given the disparity in prominence between the two galleries. IM Pei’s design for the Louvre centered on making the center of the Palatial grounds a crown Jewel, while such grounds does not exist here. The fact is that Vancouver will benefit tremendously from a raised cultural arts/ art profile and that can only be done if it is visibly prominent and integrated into the urban and cultural fabric the site offers. To give up such a good site where in its place a couple of residential towers undifferentiated from the next is a missed opportunity, and one that is gravely a step in the wrong direction. “Audain said he hopes the VAG will hire a Canadian architect for the new building, but he does not want to waste time considering an alternate location. “I believe the Larwill Park site is perfect for a new VAG building as the downtown is moving east and it’s right next door to a SkyTrain station,” Audain told Postmedia. “With city council support, and the project finally in good hands with developer Jon Stovell (who took over as VAG board chair in February 2024) at the helm, I see absolutely no point in wasting years searching for another site.” #vancouverartgallery #artgallery #gallery #vancouver #art #architecture #britishcolumbia #development #urbanplanning

I recently visited the stunning exhibition "Circle of Light" at Gropius Bau and I couldn't help but be captivated by the mesmerising round tubes and round holes by Nancy Holt. They have a captivating way of playing with the light in different moments of the day and also changes the perspective! 🌒🌓🌔🌕 For instance, when you look through this tube and catch a glimpse in the mirror, you witness yourself from an entirely distinct #perspective compared to any other point. The concept seems logical, but the actual impact it has is truly astonishing. This became so obvious when I attempted to capture this photograph... As I walked through the exhibition, these beautiful round tubes reminded me of something else: the round mirrors I used as wall decor.✨ The way the light reflected off the tubes created a mesmerising play of shadows and patterns, much like the way the mirrors enhanced the natural light in the apartment. It's incredible how art and design can make a difference and transform our surroundings and evoke different emotions. The exhibition offered a unique perspective, allowing me to see the world from a different point of view. It reminded me that even the simplest #objects can hold great beauty and significance when seen through the lens of #art. If you're in the area, I highly recommend visiting the "Circle of Light" exhibition. It's a truly immersive #experience that will leave you inspired and in awe of the power of light and perspective. 📍 Gropius Bau Exhibition: Circle of Light by Nancy Holt 🌟 #CircleOfLightExhibition #NancyHolt #ArtInspiration #DesignPerspective #Reflections #GropiusBau #TransformingSpaces #InspiredByArt #PointOfView #CreativeJourney

WMF will maintain the historical streetscape look of the current building while completely renovating the interior in concert with well-known exhibit designers, Jack Rouse & Associates (JRA). The new Museum design will complement the building’s original architecture while making a vibrant statement that embraces their new focus on STEAM. The design will also incorporate nearly 4,000 square feet of garden space between their building and the Erie Art Museum. The Golden Ratio plays a crucial role in enhancing the visitor experience in museums, elevating aesthetic appeal and ambiance. Here's how it impacts the visitor experience: - **Visual Harmony:** Utilizing the Golden Ratio in architecture and exhibit design fosters visually pleasing proportions, creating a sense of harmony and balance, ultimately enhancing visitor satisfaction. - **Spatial Layout:** Implementing the Golden Ratio in exhibit and gallery layouts helps guide visitors through spaces seamlessly, improving navigation, reducing congestion, and enriching the overall experience. - **Aesthetic Appeal:** Integrating the Golden Ratio in design elements like facades, windows, and decor enhances the attractiveness of museums, leaving a lasting positive impression and encouraging longer visits. - **Cultural Resonance:** The historical and cultural significance of the Golden Ratio adds depth to museum exhibits, enriching the educational aspect of the visit. By embracing the Golden Ratio in design, museums craft environments that are not just functional but also captivating and inspiring for visitors.

One of the dominant aesthetics of gothic architecture is the use of vastly varying radii with tracery setting out and moulding details in general. The true elegance of this can only be achieved by means of the common normal. That is where two or more curves with differing radii can flow seamlessly in an organic fashion without any sharp changes in direction. Provided that they are set out in a way that all the centres share a common normal. In simple terms, both centers lie on the same line. This principle is key to the Gothic aesthetic as it demonstrates a clear creative separation from the strict regimentation of classical setting out. It provided the opportunity to create cellular-morphic forms while adhering to geometric principles.

Casa Alma was a dedicated exhibition unit created for CASACOR, São Paulo’s premier festival of architecture and interior design, designed to provide a sensory environment where visitors could reconnect with their senses. This physical space explored perceptions and feelings through carefully curated textures and spatial design. Visitors wore Apple Watches that captured their heartbeats and movements, which were transformed into real-time artworks inspired by the design elements within Casa Alma. André Mattos and Gabriel Santos (GAN) led the creative and technical development for the data-driven art, producing over 1,600 unique artworks based on visitors' biometric data during the event. This project was completed in collaboration with Midiadub, Melina Romano Studio, and Dexco. What it's about: Art generated from visitors' sensations. We love this project for: Blending technology with personal experience. Things to watch out for: Real-time art reflecting heartbeats and movements. #Experiential #Generative #Interactive #Realtime #DataDriven #GANDirectors #CreativeTechnology #Immersive
