Combining surgeon-support tech and #reinforcementlearning can automate simple surgical support tasks such as endoscopic camera control and ease the workload of surgical teams. Training an #RL agent in an actual surgery environment, however, poses challenges in terms of safety and training sample efficiency. The combination of live human demonstrations with the RL agent's exploration of a task is a promising solution to these challenges. It can accelerate the training process and prevent unsafe situations during the training period. In our new publication, we examine the effectiveness of the proposed method in a real-world setup for learning endoscopic camera control.
