Criterion-referenced cut scores often focus on minimal competence rather than excellence. My latest preprint proposes a mastery-oriented cut-scoring method using contrasting groups and cognitive diagnosis. Preliminary results suggest that the proposed method has the potential for positive educational outcomes and better patient safety in programmatic assessment settings and high-stakes licensing examinations.
