In the context of European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA)'s Future Driven Experience, we co-hosted a panel debate on the role of #hydrogen in decarbonising #heavyduty vehicle #roadtransport.   Our Director Laurent Donceel stressed the urgency of ramping up #decarbonisation solutions, creating lead markets for #cleantechnologies and maintaining a competitive industry: Europe must find the right balance between nurturing its technological edge and strengthening the #competitiveness of its industry. We need to improve cooperation between vehicle providers, stations operators and the local level, without destabilizing the #energytransition legal framework.   He was joined in the panel by Axel Volkery (DG MOVE, European Commission) and Roy Zarkewski (MAN Truck & Bus SE and Bus). Tier 1 manufacturers hold a critical role in the automotive supply chain, and with this role comes the opportunity to drive significant impact towards the UN SDGs I am sharing about the Tier 1 manufacturers' contribution in more sustainable future with respect to the selective SDGs that can be applied accordingly: ->Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Tier 1 manufacturers lead automotive innovation. Through research in eco-friendly tech like advanced propulsion systems and lightweight materials, we drive sustainable industrial growth and infrastructure advancement. ->Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: Tier 1 manufacturers can design products with a focus on recyclability, durability, and efficiency. This includes using recycled materials, reducing waste during manufacturing, and implementing closed-loop processes to minimize environmental impact. ->Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy: Electric mobility is the future, and Tier 1 manufacturers are at the forefront of this revolution. By developing and supplying components for electric vehicles (EVs), such as batteries, motors, and power electronics, we accelerate the transition towards clean and renewable energy sources in transportation. ->Goal 13: Climate Action: Reducing carbon emissions is a shared responsibility. Tier 1 manufacturers can contribute by developing energy-efficient components, optimizing vehicle aerodynamics, and collaborating with OEMs to meet stringent emission standards. This collective effort leads to a significant reduction in the automotive industry's carbon footprint. ->Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals: Collaboration is the cornerstone of sustainable progress. Using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model, we evaluated the environmental impacts and costs of these solutions to guide sustainable investment and policymaking. 🔍 Key findings: Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) stand out as the most promising solution for emissions reduction. Supply chain emissions (Scope 3) significantly impact the overall environmental footprint. This week we were invited, together with Member States and EU decision-making representatives, to attend the High-Level Conference on the EU Automotive Ecosystem organised by the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union #HU24EU. Our CEO, Olof Persson, gave a speech on the peculiarities and the challenges that heavy-duty vehicles, including trucks and buses, currently are and will continue facing on the #transition to carbon neutrality. From a technological innovation perspective, he highlighted how our industry has always been at the forefront with state-of-the-art products, confirmed by the wide offer of battery electric and hydrogen powered heavy-duty vehicles that all European manufacturers already have in their portfolios. He emphasised that on the other hand there is no single solution in #decarbonising heavy trucks; rather there is an urgent need for a technology-neutral regulatory framework that should consider carbon-neutral fuels as complementary to zero-emission technologies for reaching the CO2 reduction targets. Olof reminded everyone that a just and affordable transition will only happen if every actor in the value chain has clear targets and he called on European and National Institutions to provide long-lasting support to customers and transport operators, as this will be fundamental to triggering sustainable carbon-neutral transport in the EU. #WeGoBeyond

🚛💨 Exciting news in the world of sustainable transportation! Daimler Truck AG Truck has secured €226 million in funding from the German federal and state governments to develop and produce 100 fuel cell trucks. This significant investment, part of the EU's Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hydrogen program, aims to advance hydrogen technology in the commercial vehicle sector. The trucks, which will be built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth, are expected to hit the roads by the end of 2026, marking a major step towards decarbonizing road freight transportation [https://lnkd.in/e5WPVcwC].
