So what did yesterday look like across the sector? Well, there's still a lot of deep diving to do but here are the headlines.
Firstly, overall CPC on Google was £15.39.
Way more expensive than last year, but more universities took a more aggressive tactic this year (presumably scrambling to make up numbers and a shortfall in international applicants).
The cheapest ad group was a big surprise – Russell Group keywords! Although this is only really relevant for the RGs and those highly ranked universities it's worth having this ad group in next year for this group of institutions, for sure.
The second cheapest ad group was Brand keywords this is expected if you've done a good job in the lead up to the big day.
When we removed RGs from the equation, all CPCs do go up quite a bit and Clearing related terms became the most expensive keywords with over 72% increase! This says to me that the RGs were indeed taking up a lot of generic Clearing searchers yesterday.

Factors to qualify a good/bad backlink:
- Relevance
- Authority
- Anchor Text
- Placement
- Trustworthiness
- Traffic?
- Is it part of a PBN?
- Rel Attributes (nofollow, sponsored, UGC)
- Destination
Assigning these factors a score and evaluating the cumulative score for each backlink can help give a good idea about a website's backlink profile.
