Representatives of the club attended the Missed Birthdays instillation today at Westfield White City in support of CALM's brilliant and powerful initiative - 6,929 balloons representing the birthdays that young people were tragically unable to celebrate. In the last decade, 6,929 young people in the UK have taken their own lives. It’s a stat that underlines a devastating truth: so many young lives are ending when they should just be beginning. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Calm have launched their Missed Birthdays installation, aiming to raise awareness of the devastating reality of youth suicide in this country. 115 people die by suicide in the UK every week – with 75% of those deaths being male. 16 people… every single day 💔 Those left behind are completely destroyed. The ripple effect is huge. But not ‘being OK’ is still widely stigmatised. That must change. We need to open up these conversations. Changing the narrative on suicide requires systematic change. It’s about shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openess, understanding and support. So let’s all aim to change the narrative. Let’s gently remind loved ones today and every day that they are loved, that they are supported, and that they are not alone, even on the very darkest of days 💛

This is REALLY worth a couple of clicks. 10 minutes of your time now might inspire you with the future confidence to say something which might otherwise have felt like an awkward check-in. You absolutely never know what someone might need; if they don't need support, nothing bad will happen. If they do, your moment of social risk could be life-changing, or lifesaving. Please give this a few minutes and allow it to have an impact on your communications. I'm not directly first hand personally affected but I've often been more than adjacent - like so many of us, sadly too many people I'm close to and care about have lost family members - their partners, their children, their dearest, closest friends to suicide (mostly, but not exclusively youth suicide). Their uniting factor is a significant and deep wish for this devastating experience to be prevented for others. All of us can meet them there. Please do click through and have the confidence to overstep care for others; it's either going to be the very best insignificant mistake you can make, or a pivotal lifeline. And if you are ever feeling desperate or trapped in a moment/situation yourself, ALWAYS seek help. Lodge that now. If you ever feel like there's no way through, there is absolutely always someone who can wade through the crap with you til it starts to feel like there is a possibility things could get bearable again. They might just help you get help, but... that will eventually help. On that, I don't care if I don't know you well; sometimes a random peripheral is just the right person. I'll never think reaching out is weird! It's wise, and brave, and ought to be more common.

Today marks World Suicide Prevention Day and the campaign from CALM this year focuses on the fact that in the last 10 years suicide has claimed the lives of 6,929 young people! Suicide is now the biggest killer of young people under 25! Each balloon in the display at Westfield represents the age the young person would have been on their next birthday and when you look at the numbers it’s utterly heartbreaking 💔 There is more to be done to stop this! CALM have created a toolkit for any trusted adult to use to help support a young person and you can find more information about how to CARE at care.thecalmzone.net It starts with conversations and removing the stigma and shame that come with suicide. 1 in 4 of us will have suicidal thoughts at some point in our lives. We talk to our children about how to keep safe with regards to drugs, violence, sex yet still we need to normalise that being human means we will experience difficult times in life and our brains may feel like we can’t carry on, or this is the only way out, but always know there is another way and that things will change and life can get better. We want to keep our children and young people safe and protect them from the darker side of life, but the reality is that in todays technologically advanced world and the overwhelming information they have access to from such a young age, combined with the pressures they face from social media etc mean we must have these conversations in order to keep them safe!

This installation by Campaign Against Living Miserably is unbelievably powerful, and shocking. Having experienced loss to suicide I can honestly say it’s something that leaves a lasting impact - one that reshapes how you view life, mental health, and the importance of friendships. It’s okay not to be okay. It's okay to reach out for help, to talk openly about struggles, and to lean on others. It’s also incredibly important to be kind, you never really know what someone is experiencing and how your words or behaviour might make someone else feel. Whether you're the one battling or the one supporting someone who is, remember that silence isn’t the answer. Listening can save lives.
