Vera, my mobile, part-time office (yes I did indeed name her!) has uninvited guests. I aim to live and let live with my local wildlife but mice partying in my campervan making snow from the kitchen towel left in from last year's trips, is too much. So, I took up a very kind offer from a friend to utilise the services of her ferrets. Vera was driven over and, it was infact a Polecat, she is very beautiful and apparently the best hunter, made her way around all parts of the van identifying, quite accurately, that the mice, whilst they had been rampaging inside, were ensconced behind the dashboard. Unfortunately, the engine was too hot from the journey, and with darkness descending there was no time for it to cool, so they remain in situ. But the threat of the return of the Polecat has proved sufficient to keep them out of the interior, for now.    In similar spirit, HMRC continues its campaign of nudge letters and other intimidatory correspondence. Intended to part you from your cash as you settle and deter you from future tax planning. Whatever your response, please ensure you do not complete and return the certificate included with the nudge letter as HMRC does not have statutory power to compel you to do so.    If you would like to discuss the approach, settlement, or anything else in respect of HMRC inquiries please get in touch.    Photo: A Polecat (not THE actual Polecat!)   #nudge #taxplanning #taxplanningstrategies #cashflow

The UK Government has announced that Furnished Holiday Let Allowances are to be abolished. The Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers and our stakeholder partners, PASC UK, will meet with HM Treasury on 19th August to discuss FHL. We look forward to a pragmatic discussion which is pro-growth and pro-business.   Fiona Campbell, CEO of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers, said:   “We will continue to engage constructively on this key issue to protect the self-catering industry across the UK. While some concessions have already been secured, we will work tirelessly to achieve more.    Increasing the tax burden on holiday properties across the UK won’t just impact holiday homeowners – those who provide affordable and accessible options to families who want to holiday in our country – it will strip tens of thousands of associated jobs which rely on the sector from local economies, from pubs, cafes, restaurants, farm shops and visitor attractions.   We must strive to mitigate against unintended consequences from government legislation. This is something we know all too well from the experience of small business owners in Scotland who have been saddled with the costs and bureaucracy associated with the Scottish Government’s short-term let planning and licensing regimes.”   HM Treasury are inviting comment on changes to the FHL regime until 15th September 2024.
