What charities are people most motivated to donate to? This year there has been a shift in the rankings. Children’s charities (46%) is the highest, maintaining a position in the top three since 2016. Mental health has ascended to second place (42%), entering the top three causes for the first time, with the proportion who are motivated to support this cause growing steadily from 29% in 2017 to 42% today. The reason donors might give can change depending on global and local events. For example, disaster response in Australia saw a large spike due to the 2019-2020 bushfires. We are seeing an increase in younger donors being less loyal to one charity, with cause being a key driver to engagement, more so than familiarity with the charity or brand legacy. The highlight of my week was Sussex Community Foundation's #SussexintheCity event. 132 people came to hear Torsten Bell of Resolution Foundation talk about the impact of the #costofliving crisis on ordinary families, and we explained how UK Community Foundations, are supporting vital local charities that are giving hope for the future. Torsten showed that inflation affects the poorest people most - many people find their budgets just do not cover their most basic needs. When times are tight most of us go to a cheaper supermarket, or buy own brands. But if you are already shopping at the cheapest place, there is nowhere to go but to skip meals. Many mothers are missing meals so that their children can eat. This is why we need local charities to help in this emergency. This crisis is deep, and urgent. It is also long lasting. But we can make a difference - by supporting your local community foundation you can help local charities today and for the long term, and truly change people's lives. #philanthropy #sussexinthecity #charity #communityfoundations

As some of you might know, my parents have actively volunteered for many years at the Haven food bank in my community. Unfortunately they are facing severe funding challenges and they might be forced to close their doors at a time when demand is the highest it’s ever been. Please read, share and if you can donate. Note from the Haven: We are reaching out to you with an urgent plea. Without immediate financial support Haven on the Queensway is facing the imminent possibility of having to cease our operations. Closing our doors would be detrimental to our clients and community. Our Food Bank provides essential groceries to individuals and families who are facing food insecurity and over the past 24 months we have seen a steady increase of clients rise from an average of 450 to now over 1,000 every week. Current statistics reveal that 1 in 10 Torontonians are accessing foodbanks. Unfortunately, the demand for our food assistance has surged significantly, reflecting the harsh reality faced by many who are struggling to put food on their tables. Our Haven’s Closet has witnessed an overwhelming surge in need over the past couple of months. The demand for clothing has soared by 333%, jumping from an average of 30 new intakes to a staggering 130. These numbers reflect the stories of individuals and families facing a depth of challenges we could hardly have imagined. Recently, our First Care coordinator encountered a mother standing before her with her baby, expressing the desperation of having nothing to feed her child. The number of our friends experiencing homelessness served by our Hope with Wheels program has risen by 120% over the past year alone, emphasizing the critical nature of this outreach program. Our seniors rely on our deliveries of food and hygiene kits and look forward to our weekly friendly phone calls. The demand for these deliveries has surged with a long waitlist. Despite our unwavering commitment, we're confronted with the reality of growing operating costs and a significant shortfall in our financial donations which is putting the Haven in the very real situation of having to close in the very near future. We urgently seek your support to continue making a lasting difference to those in need in our community. Our immediate goal would be to raise an additional $100,000 in financial donations over the next 30 days and the Board of Directors along with our staff are actively looking for ways to reduce costs going forward. TL;DR: if you or your company are looking for places to donate this holiday season, please consider the Meadowbridge Community Market, a volunteer run, nonprofit free grocery store in my town. This is a slow time of year (for some of us, at least) that give us time to reflect on what we value. It's also a time of year that highlights the extreme suffering and needs of those in our local communities while we spend time with friends and family, sharing meals in our homes. One community group that my partner and I have put time and money into is MAD RVA, a group that came together in 2020 to help fill the needs of our community when social safety nets failed by delivering PPE and food. Since then, they've gone on to organize as a 501(c)(3), get a building on the north side of Richmond, and open a free grocery store (as of April 15, 2023). The group is entirely volunteer run, no staff, so every dollar goes to keeping the building open and stocked for shoppers. Currently around 150 people come through every Saturday and can shop for what they LIKE, not what just what is handed to them like at a food bank. They take donations of food and other home goods, rely on the generosity of people giving time, but the most current need is getting to $10,000/month in recurring donations. Currently they're at about $6,300. Please consider giving even a one-time donation and it would help continue to support the community and fight food insecurity.
