Device sustainability needs to be at the forefront of responsible innovation in health technology for many reasons. A greener NHS agenda and the eradication of single-use plastics are perhaps the stand out examples. In this fascinating video, Dr Ali Mosayyebi, Senior Research Fellow at University of Southampton (UoS) discusses his innovative design of ureteric stents and SOOBA Medical, an upcoming spin-out from UoS. Ureteric stents are cheap flexible tubes that are developed to use as a temporary solution for bypassing the urine from obstructions such as kidney stones or oncological tumors. They are used by clinicians to insert in the body as a drainage method while you're looking for long term treatment. Despite their great advantage, the majority of these devices fail. They get crusted and bacterial biofilms start forming on the surface and if this is not addressed, it could lead to a urinary tract infection. Ali started his PhD looking into developing a better understanding about the failure of these devices and the possibility of engineering a superior alternative. After liaising with clinicians, regulatory authorities and after numerous experiments, his first prototype is ready to use. Last week, I had a fantastic time at #AIMDay hosted by The University of Edinburgh with Medical Device Manufacturing Centre, Heriot-Watt University, and CPI picking the brightest minds of the Scottish #healthtech ecosystem about what will become the next leading themes in the industry. Among many fascinating topics, two emerged as key themes: leaner #innovation that delivers greater #value, and the interpretation of value in a holistic and strategic sense that isn't solely cost-based. How do we convey value to stakeholders, particularly buyers focused on costs? How do we quantify the value of sustainability amidst the #greenpremium? How much added-value is good diversity within a company? Overall, how do we communicate what is (morally, environmentally, and societally) right into an appealing business case?
