Today, I presented at the Maritime Lumber Bureau Conference in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island alongside Patrick Crabbe from Bird Construction. We delved into the Future of Mass Timber, highlighting its benefits and challenges across industries. Key strategies discussed included component construction, modular construction, and hybrid mass timber construction, offering a glimpse into the innovative approaches driving the sector forward. Attendees left with 3 valuable insights: 1. The allure of Mass Timber lies in its lower carbon footprint, carbon sequestration capabilities, and aesthetic appeal, particularly for institutional clients. 2. Mass Timber Construction is on a rapid growth trajectory, expected to surge by 100% annually through 2024. 3. The industry is witnessing a demand-supply gap, underlining the market's voracious appetite for mass timber solutions. The event fostered great discussions and connections within the industry. The iconic John Lewis store in Kingston upon Thames recently completed a major roof refurbishment, ensuring long-lasting performance and cost-efficiency. Through a collaborative effort between Icopal and roofing contractor UK-RTL Group, the project addressed issues like water ingress, blistering and algae growth, while overcoming challenges such as restricted access and a live site with the store remaining open to the public throughout the renovation. The flat roofing system was completed with a Noxite cap sheet – a smart, sustainable bitumen flat roofing waterproofing membrane- that removes harmful airborne pollutants from the environment around the building. Their visit highlighted how we are supporting the UK Government's ambitious target of delivering 1.5 million new homes over the next five years. 🏠 Managing Director, David Crawford, toured our guests around the facility, showcasing how our advanced offsite timber frame solutions are driving faster, more sustainable construction while aligning with government priorities like Modern Methods of Construction and the Timber in Construction Roadmap. I participated in the process that led to the Tasmanian Forest Areement. All the modeling that was done and independently verified showed that Tasmania’s native forests hardwood prodtion would hit a supply cliff and then swiftly fall away towards the end of 5his decade leaving supply to come from plantation hardwoods. All that extending contracts to 2040 will do is provide industry with the capacity to seek rent when the supply of the current log specifications can’t be met some time in the next 5 - 10 years. Industry needs to retool to cut plantation logs urgently! So architects, builders and specifiers need to do due diligence. This is not sustainable. STT has failed twice in its bid to be FSC certified. PEFC certification provides no guarantees of sustainability
