Embarking on a remarkable journey of knowledge today as I find myself immersed in ‘Principles of Internal Medicine by Harrison.’ Who would have thought that my two-decade journey as a bookseller and a fervent LGBTQIA+ rights advocate would lead me to the intricate world of medical insights? It all started with a recommendation from my dear friend, Dr. Akshay, whom I reached out to help as I ll be speaking to a group of doctors today . His suggestion to explore the pages of this medical tome opened up a new chapter in my ongoing commitment to continuous learning. As I flip through the pages, I’m struck by the realization that staying relevant and inclusive requires a constant thirst for knowledge. Today, as I prepare to conduct a sensitization session for Kolhapur’s doctors on LGBTIQA+ healthcare, I’m reminded of the diverse audiences we engage with. The journey of understanding and advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights has led me to unexpected places, pushing the boundaries of my expertise. It’s a testament to the fact that growth and evolution are not confined by predetermined paths. Every page turned is a step toward a more inclusive dialogue. So here I am, sharing this moment with you all. A snapshot of a bookseller turned advocate, flipping through medical literature, driven by a passion to bridge gaps and foster understanding. Earlier this month, I contributed an article to O Jornal Económico on the important of LGBTQ+ employees’ inclusion in more open, more diverse labour market and workplace structures. Sometimes we get caught up in celebrations and promotion of activities like Pride Month and quickly forget that for our LGBTQ+ colleagues issues of inclusion and pride are part of their everyday life (and work) realities. Their hopes for, and expectations of, an employer’s valuing and including them in an open, welcoming work environment do not stop on 1 July. That is why I wanted to share my recent article on the importance of remembering LGBTQ+ inclusion in company HR, and overall business, strategy. The reality of our current job markets is that age cohorts for employees are shifting. Younger generations are moving into entry and mid-level roles and they tend to be more open to forward-thinking organisational cultures and how businesses act as community stakeholders. LGBTQ+ inclusion continues to grow in importance for leadership teams, in talent recruitment, and for employee attraction and retention strategies. I encourage you to have a look at my article below (easily translatable into English with some help from Google) and reflect upon how your business could benefit from making Pride a daily affair, not just for one month in the year. A critical part of your future, competitive employer value proposition (EVP) will definitely need to include policies for gender and ethnic diversity, safe channels for reporting discrimination, or fully open recruitment processes that do not discriminate based on gender identity or sexual orientation. Just wait and see what magic it works for your organisation’s efforts in candidate attraction, employee retention, and brand + business representation. On Radio Udaan, since the inception of my show "Badalta Daur," panel discussions have been pivotal in advocating for the amendment of Articles 15 and 16. It's heartening to see the inclusion of the prohibition of discrimination on grounds of 'disability' in the manifestos of both Congress and CPM. We urge other parties to follow suit and commit to implementing this crucial change once in power. It's noteworthy that the initiative to amend Articles 15 and 16 was introduced by Congress in 2019 in their manifesto. However, it's imperative that this issue is not confined solely to election manifestos but also actively raised in parliamentary sessions after elections. This has been a long-standing demand of the disability sector and must be addressed beyond the realm of election promises. Let's ensure that the voices of the marginalized are heard and their rights are upheld both in rhetoric and action. we congratulate Mr. Arman Ali, Executive Director of NCPEDP, for their tireless efforts in advocating for political representation and disability rights. We also commend the dedication of other organizations such as NPRD, Nipman Foundation, and individual activists who are working tirelessly to make this a reality. Together, let's strive for an inclusive society where every individual's rights are respected. Thrilled to see this piece with Aidan Ricciardo out in the world! As a cisgender gay man, I'm always cognisant of being an LGBTQIA+ researcher whose lived experience is only part of the vast rainbow umbrella. As both insiders and outsiders of queer communities, how should we go about conducting research on queer rights? In this article, we argue that LGBTQIA+ researchers should act as 'internal allies' when researching LGBTQIA+ rights, in recognition of the diversity of queer lived experiences. Although we typically think of ‘allies’ of LGBTQIA+ people as those from outside the community who are supportive of us, those of us within the LGBTQIA+ community can, and should, also think of ourselves as allies. In doing so, this allows us to draw from principles and guidance relating to effective and appropriate allyship – including obligations to self-educate, engage in appropriate consultation and co-design, and platform marginalised voices. As queer people who research queer rights, the way we approach our research and the way we present narratives about our communities through our research matters: it affects public policy, law reform efforts, access to justice and, ultimately, the lives of LGBTQIA+ people. #lgbtiq #lgbtiqrights #queer #humanrights #research #ally
I'm so pleased to have this piece published in the Alternative Law Journal – it's available open access at https://lnkd.in/grBJnZkK This article considers the dual insider/outsider positionalities LGBTQIA+ researchers have when researching LGBTQIA+ rights, exploring how this affects the obligations and expectations we should meet when doing this research. We argue that those of us within the LGBTQIA+ community are equally bound by ‘best practice’ rules when researching with and about our own communities, proposing a conceptualisation of ourselves as ‘internal allies’ when doing this work. Our argument in this article is focussed on legal research relating to LGBTQIA+ rights (although the concept of internal allyship may also prove helpful for research in other disciplines, and research relating to other marginalised communities). This is one of those pieces that has lived and developed in my head for years before Liam Elphick and I finally got around to writing it up... so it's very special to now have it finished and out in the world!

BREAKING: Yesterday, we urged the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to make it clear that third-party administrators cannot administer gender-affirming care exclusions in employer-sponsored health plans. This follows a significant victory where a district court ruled in our favor, mandating Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) to stop enforcing discriminatory exclusions on gender-affirming medical care across hundreds of ERISA health plans. Now, we're urging the Ninth Circuit to uphold this ruling and reject BCBSIL’s argument that Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act doesn’t apply to its third-party administrator (TPA) activities. Lambda Legal Counsel and Health Care Strategist Omar Gonzalez-Pagan emphasized, “It defies common sense and logic to argue, as BCBSIL does, that the administration of health coverage is not a health-related activity covered by the Affordable Care Act’s healthcare nondiscrimination law. BCBSIL voluntarily receives federal funding. As such, it is subject to the Affordable Care Act’s nondiscrimination mandate and it cannot design, administer, or enforce discriminatory exclusions.” Trans people deserve equal access to health care.
