An incredible collection of 16th-century Renaissance books in their original bindings is expected to fetch $25 million when it goes to auction at Sotheby’s in October, with price estimates up to $600,000. The books and bindings are from the collection of T. Kimball Brooker, an American scholar who has amassed more than 1300 titles over 6 decades, creating one of the most important and impressive rare-book libraries to ever reach auction, and is considered the finest Renaissance collection to exist out of Europe. A highlight of the sale is an early manuscript of Leonardo da Vinci’s Treatise on Painting, containing all of its 375 chapters and 56 illustrations in ink. It is expected to sell for $120,000-$180,000. Also up for auction are approximately 1,000 editions from the pioneering Venetian publisher Aldine Press, printed between 1494 and the 1590s. Brooker’s Aldine collection represents Greek and Latin literature, as well as works of history, philosophy, and science. For scholars/students interested in ancient Maya figurines, I just reviewed the fascinating 2022 book "Maya Mold Made: Virtual Impressions of Ancient Figurine Molds in the Ruta Maya Foundation Collection" (by Mark Van Stone and Paul Johnson) for Latin American Antiquity [34(3)]. Through over 40 years as president of a gallery dealing in art-level antique Oriental carpets, I have observed that my clients often become collectors unintentionally. They may begin with a practical purchase, with one carpet acquired to furnish a specific room in their home. Other times, collections begin emotionally; a particular piece resonates so strongly, so viscerally, that a client feels the need to have it. Attention fragrance enthusiasts! Have you heard of the Osmothèque? This museum enshrines a treasure trove of relics and documents chronicling the history of perfumery. The exhibits include cabinets of raw materials, bottles from the turn of the twentieth century, and underground vaults containing discontinued historic fragrances. These fragrances are part of the patrimony of classic perfumes, and may be used to rediscover and recreate scents whose once-secret formulas, long since lost, can be reconstructed through analysis of these surviving examples. The museum also preserves ancient documents relating to the composition and manufacture of perfume, including a description of a perfume made for the King of Parthia in ancient Asia Minor, written in the first century by Pliny the Elder. Another past project I never published: I designed this little book back in 2016 for a university class. “Lire 2000” is a research and analysis of post-war Italian paperbacks, which, despite their relatively low price, were often curated by leading figures related to the world of art and design.
