📚 "What To Do" Cycle. This strategy known as the "What To Do" Cycle, brilliantly articulated by Doug Lemov can be a game-changer in fostering a supportive and encouraging classroom culture, one that thrives on follow-through. 🔑 The 4 Key Components: 1️⃣ What To Do Directions: Start with crystal-clear, concrete, and observable directions for the task at hand. Ensure your students know exactly what's expected. 2️⃣ Be Seen Looking: Your watchful eye matters. Make it a point to visibly monitor your students' actions after you've given directions. Let them know you're invested in their success, and that you'll notice their efforts. 3️⃣ Narrate the Positive: Recognize and acknowledge their proactive behavior without excessive praise. A simple "Thanks, Chris, for getting started right away. Thanks, Jasmine" goes a long way. 4️⃣ Correct When Necessary: When it comes to correction, opt for the least invasive approach. Positive Group Correction or Anonymous Individual Correction can be remarkably effective. For example, "Make sure your pencil is moving" or "We still need to see two students writing." 🧮 The Process: WTD ➡️ BSL ➡️ Narrate ➡️ Correct When Necessary By integrating this cycle into our teaching methodologies, we create an environment where students thrive, learn, and grow. As educators, our natural inclination might be towards maintaining control, a trait deeply rooted in our survival instincts from ancient times. Yet, the true hallmark of educational leadership is the ability to embrace discomfort. It’s about confronting, not shying away from, the unknown and intimidating aspects of our profession. This includes the willingness to experiment with new teaching methods and topics. Think of our daily lives, where we often stick to familiar routines, meals, and social circles. This comfort zone, while safe, can prevent us from discovering new favorite dishes or forming invaluable friendships. The same principle applies to our teaching practices. Staying within the boundaries of known methods might feel secure, but it also limits our potential for growth and the joy of uncovering effective new approaches. Importantly, this path of exploration and change is paved with the inevitability of failure and mistakes. Remember, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Similarly, the evolution of teaching practices can’t occur without some trial and error. These are not just errors; they are vital for our development and understanding. I encourage you, therefore, to view each day as an opportunity to infuse your teaching with renewed vigor, passion, and innovation. By embracing new ideas and learning from the challenges they bring, we not only enhance our capabilities as educators but also profoundly enrich our students’ learning experiences. In the words of Neil Gaiman, “The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. Avoiding micromanagement allows students the space to think, feel at ease, and strive for improvement. While we can set boundaries for our students, being clear communicators is essential. Encouraging a culture where making mistakes is acceptable and focusing on the next steps is vital. We must instill in our students that making errors is part of the learning process, and giving up is not an option. Ultimately, recognizing and valuing each student's uniqueness and prior knowledge is crucial. Now, turn your attention to the letter on the right, a creation of my own — a figment of what I yearn to see in education. In my two decades as an educator, I've never encountered a school leader who openly appreciates teachers solely for their unwavering dedication to teaching exceptionally well. This simulated letter is an ode to those educators who may not have their praises sung as loudly. In our rush to recognize the extracurricular achievements of educators, we often overlook a crucial group: the dedicated teachers who focus intently on the art of teaching. They're not the ones you'll find leading every committee or spearheading additional projects. Instead, they pour their energy into crafting lessons that resonate, guiding students with a steady hand, and nurturing a love for learning that goes beyond any curriculum. Yet, too often, these educators are viewed through a lens of misconception — labeled as underperforming or unambitious because their work doesn't always shout for attention. But isn't there profound excellence in their quiet dedication? I invite school leaders to ponder: When was the last time we celebrated the educator who isn't in the race for recognition, yet is doing a 'damn good job'. Know Like and Trust In any educational setting, whether it's a classroom, a workshop, or an online course, establishing trust and rapport with students is of paramount importance. Trust forms the foundation upon which effective teaching and learning can thrive. Much like any relationship, trust is built upon a combination of factors, including expertise, empathy, and commitment to the growth and well-being of others. Knowing Liking and Trusting These three elements interweave to create a sense of security and confidence in the learning environment, in business and life in general. - Know - people need to feel that their instructor possesses expertise in the subject matter. This knowledge isn't just about being well-versed in the content; it's also about demonstrating an understanding of how to effectively convey that knowledge to students. - Like - while expertise lays the groundwork, creating a supportive and welcoming atmosphere hinges on likability. This isn't about being everyone's best friend but rather about displaying warmth, approachability, and genuine interest in the well-being of others. - Trust - is the cornerstone of any meaningful relationship, including the one between educators and students. Trust is earned through consistent actions that align with students/peoples' best interests. This involves being transparent, reliable, and demonstrating integrity. When students feel valued and respected as individuals, they are more inclined to engage actively in the learning process. Students will then feel secure in taking risks, asking questions, and making mistakes—essential components of the learning journey. By demonstrating knowledge, warmth, and integrity, educators create an environment where students feel valued, respected, and supported in their learning journey.
