45 % of workers in the UK are parents. To retain your talent it’s important to implement family friendly practices like these, which can help to support your team to balance their work and family responsibilities. Flexible Work Arrangements: Let your team have flexible work hours, such as flexitime or compressed workweeks, to accommodate family commitments like school pickups, doctor appointments, or childcare needs. Remote Work Opportunities: Offer remote work arrangements, enabling your team to work from home when needed, which can be particularly beneficial for parents with young children. Paid Parental Leave: Providing paid parental leave for both mothers and fathers, allowing them to bond with their newborns or newly adopted children without worrying about their job security or financial stability. Supportive Policies: Implement policies that support your team during significant family events, such as bereavement leave, flexible scheduling for medical appointments, or time off for school-related activities. Lactation Support: Ensure that nursing mothers have access to private and comfortable lactation rooms, as well as adequate break times, to express breast milk during the workday. Health and Wellness Benefits: Offer health insurance coverage for employees and their families, including access to mental health services, preventive care, and wellness programs. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

Great Harvard Business Review article about how organisations tend to under-rate caregivers. Not realizing they are likely over 70% of their staff… “They are the fastest growing workplace identity group, and they make up around 73% of the workforce. “Caregiver” is a broad term on purpose — it includes parents, those caring for elderly family members, and those supporting a sick or disabled child, sibling, or spouse. Through my work as a journalist and consultant on caregiver issues in the workplace, I see again and again that companies have serious blindspots about their caregiver population and regularly make assumptions that can undermine their stated values and goals — along with their bottom line.” #caregivers #parenting #carers #DEI #diversity

There’s no denying the economic burden that informal family caregiving is creating in our economy. It’s another example of how we have to adjust to the new realities of an aging society before those realities become serious problems. It’s not unlike the calls — often repeated by me — for employers to embrace the potential of older workers. Instead of seeing an aging workforce as an obstacle in hiring, employers should be figuring out how they are going to engage this new talent pool between the ages of 55 and 85. Similarly, instead of lamenting how caregiving duties are sapping their staff’s productivity (and forcing some workers simply to quit), employers need to figure out how they can provide support for employees who are balancing work and caregiving for an older loved one. By embracing older workers, companies can avoid massive “brain drain” as older workers leave, and reap the proven benefits of an intergenerational workforce. By supporting employees — most often women — burdened with caregiving duties, companies avoid losing them altogether, and don’t suffer huge productivity losses from workers who are burning the candle at both ends. Ultimately, companies succeed or fail based on the talent they have, the talent they nurture and the talent they retain. We are an aging society, and caregiving is a growing burden on a relatively smaller number of adult children. The companies that see this and create smart policies and practices to address it are the ones that will win the competition for talent — and, moreover, the competition in the marketplace.

👋🏼 Are you familiar with the term #AssistedLiving? 🤨The issues surrounding eldercare are complex. Beyond the immediate concerns of housing and healthcare, there is a growing recognition of the need for holistic support that addresses the physical, emotional and social well-being of seniors. 🏡 📈According to #population census conducted in 2020, dual-career couples (with both husband and wife employed) constituted the #largest group among #marriedcouples, with the proportion increasing from 47% in 2010 to 53% in 2020. 💡 So the questions are: 🤔 1. “Who is going to do the caregiving?” 2. “Who has the time and energy?” 🌳 In the light of such shifts in, changing social landscape, familial dynamics e.g. dual-career couples. Alternative living arrangements e.g. #AssistedLiving that cater to a spectrum of needs and preferences, able to bridge the gap between independent living and institutional care 💪🏼 #AgeingPopulation #PopulationHealth #Healthcare #Personalisation

In 2020, 40% of informal caregivers in the U.S. were men, up from 34% in 2009. With 78% of male caregivers reporting little to no support, it's clear that innovative solutions are needed. As Kate Abate, Community Life Director at Broadview Senior Living, notes: "A lot of the right mindset around being a caregiver is the ability to identify as one." By offering childcare or eldercare support, companies can empower their employees to embrace this crucial role while maintaining work-life balance. https://lnkd.in/ehQ8D3ct
