💼 Today, Make UK CEO Stephen Phipson CBE joined fellow leaders of business organisations from the ‘B5’ for the group’s first meeting with Rt Hon Rachel Reeves as Chancellor. Among the topics discussed was #IndustrialStrategy, with Stephen applauding the new Government for its commitments to one, and the accompanying Council, while reminding the Chancellor of the need for further detail and reassurances around the timeframe to implement such a strategy, so that businesses can plan investments accordingly. Make UK is also hoping the proposed Industrial Strategy Council will include representation from #UKmfg. On the Government’s plans to Make Work Pay, Stephen stressed that manufacturing was already above the thresholds of many of the proposals and that employers be consulted on the design and implementation of the key measures, and receive reassurances about the potential costs, alongside a commitment to flexibility for employers as well as employees so firms can continue to respond to fast-paced labour market changes. All eyes will now be on the upcoming Spending Review where Make UK hopes to see action on the skills gap, infrastructure and bringing forward CBAM. 🚨🆕 We have released our latest report - Manufacturing Outlook 2024 Q3 - in partnership with BDO! Its findings reveal a mixed picture for #UKmfg, while we’ve also taken a special look at supply chain resilience, following years of turmoil. It finds that output has turned negative for the first time in nearly four years, though is forecast to jump to +33% in Q4. Total orders are following a similar pattern, decreasing from +14% in Q2 to +7% and then also jumping by a third in the next three months. #UKmfg has yet to see a post-election boost, with sector growth forecasts revised down to 0.5% this year, from 1.2% originally, while the prediction for the economy overall in 2025 has been upgraded from 0.8% to 1.8%. Despite this mixed picture, business confidence has continued to rise.
