Pellissippi State Community College kicked off a three-year challenge Wednesday to attract and recruit 1,000 students into advanced manufacturing and connect them with industry partners. More than 30 representatives from local manufacturing companies, K-12 school systems, chambers of commerce and the college were on hand to learn more about the SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) Manufacturing Imperative – Workforce Pipeline Challenge. The alliance between Pellissippi State and SME is designed to build awareness of careers in manufacturing and accelerate the education and skill development needed to place Tennessee students in jobs making family-sustaining wages. The challenge comes as the manufacturing industry faces an estimated 2.7 million unfilled jobs by 2030. Together with SME, Pellissippi State will work to develop strategies that will strengthen the manufacturing workforce in East Tennessee. Pellissippi State is one of only 25 schools in the country invited to participate in the challenge with each college tasked with attracting 1,000 students into manufacturing jobs over the next three years.

The BMF Sector Awareness Programme Working Group – 'Making a Material Difference' together. We’ve been working hard, getting ready for the the soft launch of the programme to BMF members at JCB Rocester, on 30th April. For the last 18 months now, I've had the great privilege of working with this exceptional group of people! Together with the BMF team, Jeremy Harris, Anu Singh, we’ve been shaping the strategy that will put Building Materials on the map, for the first time. It's been quite a journey: researching the barriers we need to overcome to attract top talent and new entrants into the sector. Defining what makes our sector unique and articulating those powerful USPs that have never been promoted in a coordinated way before. Developing the brand, creative and communications strategy that will make our 'invisible' sector visible and create clear pathways into it. And understanding the needs of the BMF's wide range of members, from merchants to manufacturers and service providers, creating a programme that strengthens the sector for all. None of this would have been possible without the enthusiasm and expert guidance provided by the Working Group, in the photo, left to right: Marianna Peet Tamasine Hickey Natalie Sartain Simon Gambrill Joanne Callow Andy Rayner Siobhan Lewis Lousie Parkes Natalie Chapman Thanks also to the other Working Group members: Mark Mallinder, EH Smith Lynda Moore, Bradfords Joni Beal, Alsford Timber Lousie Polston, Alsford Timber Simon Humpage, Selco Alex Peacock, Williams Evie Parkinson, Marshalls Heather Wolfenden, Lindab Rebecca Hughes, Talasey Plus all the 100's of members and individuals who have supported the campaign development so far, apologies, too many to name all here: Alsford Timber Chandler Builders Merchants CW Berry Forterra Harlow Brothers LBS Builders Merchants Lindab Lords Group Manthorpe Building Products Ox Tools Pimberly Selco Travis Perkins/LEAP Wavin Weinerberger Williams Plumbing & Heating and many more. Myself, the working group and the BMF team can’t wait to share all of this with you on 30th April. If you want to know more, or find out how to attend the event, contact Jeremy Harris, places are limited, so please act fast. This is our unique opportunity to shape the Building Materials sector together. We can't make this happen without you! #buildersmerchantsfederation #buildingmaterials #skills

Pathway one: Career and technical education While a four-year degree is important for many students — especially if their ideal job is among the 64% that do require a college degree—college may not be the best pathway or even a needed pathway for others. Career and technical education (CTE) programs are one non-college pathway to prepare students for the workforce. These programs also engage students in what they’re learning. CTE programs in high school: Show students tangible proof of their skills and what they’re learning and why Give students access to entry- and mid-level certifications that let them enter the workforce right after high school or use to skip college courses. Are more likely to graduate high school.
Marisa Littlefield and Hans Meeder recently attended the 2024 Arkansas CTE Summer Conference. They had the pleasure of chatting with Molly Lindsey, Executive Director of Arkansas ACTE. Great conversations and connections that will help us continue to support and advance CTE in Arkansas. Looking forward to future collaborations! 💫 ✏ #ArkansasCTE #CTESummerConference #CareerAndTechnicalEducation #Networking

We're looking forward to welcoming 800 school pupils to West Yorkshire Manufacturing Services & 25 manufacturers from across the region to celebrate National Manufacturing Day #NMD2024. Throughout the day pupils will have the opportunity to race cars down the F1 in Schools track, land the flight simulator with Space Hub Yorkshire, see demonstrations in the apprenticeship workshop & Industry 4.0 Hub with Calderdale College & experience robotics and 3D printing with The University of Huddersfield. This is not to mention the VR, AR, specialist 3D printing, laser cutting & the chance to talk to apprentices with all our fantastic regional manufacturers. Thanks to Eastwood Insurance Brokers who have sponsored the day to enable us to showcase what a great creative, innovative & dynamic sector this is. If you are based in West Yorkshire & would like to experience this for yourselves we are opening our doors from 3-5pm, after the schools have left, to the general public to learn about modern manufacturing.
