The University of Chicago asks students to consider which unwritten rules ought to be broken, asking “what is an unwritten rule that you wish didn’t exist?” In doing so, the University lays space for students to display their personal values system and how their perspectives may fit (or resist) the social or cultural norms around them. Here's our case for why more colleges should think outside the box on supplemental essay questions on applications. #collegeapplications #equityineducation #collegeadmissions #essayprompts

I stopped teaching grad school six years ago because of frustration with both “central administration” and more students who couldn’t keep up with both reading and writing assignments. I spent more time “correcting” papers because more students could not write despite having bachelors degrees. Most students didn’t read textbooks, did poor research, and failed to build effective arguments because they had never been taught how to do so, all of which goes back to failures in secondary education to prepare students for higher learning. Excerpt: “Some professors claim they have been forced to reduce reading assignments and lower their expectations to stop students becoming overwhelmed - even though the workload is often less intense than in previous years. It is not that students are illiterate, they say, but rather that youngsters are not used to ploughing through lengthy texts and struggle to focus for long periods of time - often due to the distraction of social media.” Technology should “enable” students to deal with more complex knowledge, but TikTok has dulled this capability, and parents everywhere should beware that much of the tuition being paid to prestigious universities is wasted because students are not being held accountable to a higher standard of learning than high school. Please read the full article, especially if you have kids in high school who aspire to attend college.
This largely explains why Harris, even though is hiper incompetent, is voted for by millions. Elite colleges where students can't cope with strain of reading an entire book: 'My jaw dropped'. You must project this same issue to other groups of the population.

Interesting slide in today’s lecture: Subjects that are more demanding academically tend to be chosen by students from higher socio-economic backgrounds. This could suggest that students with more resources or from certain social backgrounds are more likely to take up or succeed in these subjects.
