Bravo Plastic Soup Foundation, ARTIS | Natura Artis Magistra and Van Doorne for putting on an event that brought together the scholarship, knowhow and praxis that we need to address plastic pollution and protect health. For this event I was invited to talk about what we know from science about plastic particles and plastic-associated chemicals in relation to our health. How exposed are we to the thousands of insidious components slyly leaching out of our plasticized living environments? And what about the toxicities and health outcomes after being exposed to the plastic-chemical cocktail of pollution we encounter in our day-to-day? A key question arises: ‘What can we do with all that we know?’ My message: what seems like a dire and daunting situation doesn’t have to be when you have practical ideas to work with. When we start putting these into practice on both an individual and a collective level, we see our world begin to change. Are you interested in discussing more about what we can do to put valuable thoughts and ideas into action? I’d be happy to hear from you. #Datascience... lets celebrate Earth's Data Day with a touch of Vedas... On Earth Day, let's embrace the Vedic perspective: seeing the Earth as a living, sacred entity deserving of reverence and care. With principles like Dharma (duty), Ahimsa (non-violence), and rituals honoring nature, let's commit to sustainable living and preserving our planet's vitality for future generations.

This is utterly brilliant! Daniel Christian Wahl and Nate Hagens in conversation. https://lnkd.in/efbkGPRv Daniel & Nate, the over arching topic of your fascinating discussion is exactly why, at Artecology, we are led by craft and not tech. It’s why, in our field, we view groovy tech as counterproductive and for us an unnecessary barrier between human touch and the natural world. It’s why we recognise our species-wide collective tendency for delusion and embrace it as a uniquely human trait that can be harnessed as super power for good if we want it to be. It’s why we created our ‘Shaping Better Places’ framework. It’s why we turned away from the pursuit of traditional business as usual investment. It’s why we too often find ourselves having to reframe the notion of scale to those who struggle to understand our counter-businesslike progress. It’s why environmental policymakers, regulators, scientists, academics, universities, schools, governments, local authorities, corporates, artists, creatives and communities of all types rock up at our tiny studio door on the Isle of Wight Biosphere Reserve wanting to be let in, …even though we don’t claim to have any answers to the big questions, …we just have our hands, our minds, some materials, our friends, a bunch of transferable techniques for crating small scale “intentional habitats” for wildlife, and a belief that we might help put people back in the biota by working at the intersection where the inner mindscape meets the outer landscape.

Happy #DeepDay! 🥳🦑🐙 Join us in celebrating the critical role the deep ocean plays in making life on Earth possible. The #DeepSea makes up 90% of the marine environment, helping to make life on Earth possible for us all. However, just 5% of the ocean is estimated to have been explored. The deep sea is the largest habitat on Earth, home to as many as 10 million species! With every exploratory journey into the deep sea returning with news of fascinating discoveries and revealing creatures uniquely adapted to life deep below the waves, it is crucial that we protect this environment, both for its intrinsic and functional values. Although it’s difficult to access, the deep sea is not safe from human disturbances. Destructive bottom trawlers continue to plunder seamounts, pulverizing ancient ecosystems and destroying all life in their path. Meanwhile, a handful of companies and countries want to open the deep sea to mining, which would pose an unprecedented threat to the health of our ocean. Science warns that the damage #DeepSeaMining would cause ecosystems would be irreversible. Listen to a special message from our Director Sian Owen: https://lnkd.in/e7dCejaW Celebrate with us and find out more about this unique ecosystem ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dZDZmDHx

You can't be the same person after a class like this with Stephan Harding. He took us on a 4.5 km walk to help us understand what the age of the planet really means, and this walk has a good dose of Deep Ecology. He asked us to think, with each step: 500,000 years. Each meter = 1 million years of Earth's age. Therefore, depending on the person’s height, each step would be the equivalent of 1 million years. Throughout the walk, Stephan would stop to explain the key moments in the evolution of our planet: the collision with the celestial body that formed the moon, the first ocean cell capable of transforming sunlight into energy, the first sea creatures, the first plants, the dinosaurs... and in the end, he takes out a ruler and reminds us that Homo sapiens arrived just 30 centimeters before completing the 4.5 km. And that the industrial revolution, which brought with it the mechanistic view of nature, the concept of exploiting 'natural resources' indefinitely in the name of capitalism, money, and the eternal comfort of human beings, the explosions of greenhouse gas emissions, violence, and social inequality... all of that, all this mess, all this destruction, all this chaos began in 1/5 of 1 millimeter. In 1/5 of 1 millimeter, we are managing to destroy what the Earth took 4.5 km to build (making the analogy that each step equals 1 meter and each meter equals 1 million years). THEREFORE... Here lies the scale of our significance and insignificance. Here lies the magnitude of our destructive power, but also our energy, which, if applied to construction and regeneration, could steer us away from the course of the planet's sixth great mass extinction. We are more powerful and capable than we imagine when we unite with a common intention. Is it utopia to think this is possible? I would say it’s, but its also realism and a vital necessity for it to be possible. I’d rather be an idealist and do my part to make it happen. Little by little... The Deep Time Walk from here on depends solely on our individual and collective choices. And where did this activity that impacted thousands of people around the world come from? From the soul and genius mind of Stephan Harding. Anyone who wants to experience this walk can download an app called Deep Time Walk. May your mathematical steps across Earth's body inspire courage and insights for the next great revolution that eagerly awaits us. . https://lnkd.in/g2c8qyVi

Happy Earth Day everyone! 💫 Here are four different seeds of inspiration about nature in us and us in nature. 🌎 "What takes a millennia to create, can be destroyed in hours. We are now at a cross-road, but if we understand the nature of nature, there is hope." - Enric Sala, Ocean Explorer and Author The Nature of Nature. 🌊 "Up to four out of five breaths we take come from the sea. The main drivers of this amazing production of the life-giving oxygen are microscopic, drifting plants, called microalgae. Despite amounting to only about 1 per cent of the global plant biomass, microalgae account for at least half the oxygen production in our atmosphere. All this goes to show that size really doesn’t matter." - InnSæi: heal, revive and reset with the Icelandic art of intuition (2024) ❤️ "How far can you go in violating the Mother that gave you life? As long as the feminine is diminished the connection between us and the earth is gonna be always underscored by a big question mark we have abused the earth so much, that we don’t know which direction to go." - Malidoma Patrice Somé, Daggara Elder and Author of The Healing Wisdom of Africa 🌞 "Photosynthesis is about turning sunlight into energy. Metaphorically speaking, I like to think that we humans also photosynthesise. A nice walk in the sun can energise us; the sun is vital to our existence, providing the vitamin D we need for healthy bones and a healthy immune system, which increases our well-being. Also, the more we can metaphorically absorb light – such as beauty, awe and positive energy – into our lives, the more energy we have and the more we can thrive and care as human beings." - InnSæi: heal, revive and reset with the Icelandic art of intuition (2024) #Earth #NatureInUs #UsInNature #InnSæi #Intuition #SeaWithin
