Landing in #Indonesia back in 2010, For me it was all anticipation and uncertainty. What awaited me in this vast archipelago? The years that followed have been a whirlwind of experiences, exciting and rewarding. In the 11th edition of the Expat Insider 2024 rankings by InterNations, Indonesia is ranked 3rd. The ranking gathered responses from over 12,500 expats representing 175 nationalities in 174 countries or territories, analyzing factors such as Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance and the Expat Essentials Index (which covers housing, administration, language and digital life). What works in Indonesia's favor? --> Affordability, --> Friendly people, and --> Excellent work-life balance The report highlights room for improvement in areas like digital infrastructure and healthcare, but the progress is undeniable and opportunities abound. Relocation .... does it scare you or bring lots of excitement in you? Reposting this for the map! Thank you Surya Sharma. I come across many executives who wish to relocate... hope this map gives you some ideas... I find that often the language determines the choice of country. Many Indians wish to relocate to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia because of the English language...and some familiarity with the lifestyle/culture ... Other reasons people want to relocate can be the type of education they want to give to their children or for the weather and lifestyle. And of course for many it is a career change or career promotion. Have you ever thought of relocating? Do you know how to negotiate a relocation package? 👉 DM me if you want to make your relocation a great success for you and your family. #relocationforwork #careeradvice #careercounselling #changingcountries #relocationpackage

In Indonesian culture, there exists a more relaxed approach towards time, a stark contrast to the punctuality often observed in countries like Japan or Germany, where time is meticulously managed down to the last second. This cultural perspective on time is deeply ingrained in the Indonesian way of life, especially noticeable in casual gatherings and non-office environments. Within professional settings, time may be respected more rigorously, yet it's important for expatriates working in Indonesia to understand and adjust to this cultural nuance. The Indonesian approach is not indicative of a lack of punctuality but rather a reflection of a broader cultural value that prioritizes flexibility and a less hurried lifestyle. This is not to say that some offices are very punctual and professional in respect to time, deadlines and reporting but it may not be all. As such, expatriates should not be surprised to encounter a more laid-back attitude towards time and should see it as an opportunity to embrace a vital aspect of Indonesian culture, enhancing their experience in the country.

In various cultures, the boundary regarding private and public topics often shifts, reflecting a wide spectrum of social norms and values. For instance, in Indonesia, it is common for locals to pose numerous questions to newly arrived expatriates. This practice might be interpreted as overly inquisitive or intrusive from the viewpoint of someone hailing from a society where personal space and privacy are highly cherished. However, within the Indonesian context, such questioning is a gesture of interest and hospitality, not meant as an infringement on privacy. This contrast underscores a fundamental cultural difference in perceptions of what constitutes an appropriate question. While some cultures might prioritize personal boundaries and consider certain topics off-limits for casual conversation, others like Indonesia often view these inquiries as a means to foster connection and get to know you better. Understanding these nuances is crucial for navigating cross-cultural interactions, highlighting the importance of empathy and openness in appreciating the diverse perspectives on what is deemed suitable for discussion

𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒂 𝑫𝒂𝒚 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 & 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒓 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 This Malaysia Day, we reflect not only on the unity of our nation but also on the need for equity across all regions. Having lived and studied in Sarawak for five years, I’ve seen the deep connections between East and West Malaysia, as well as the unique challenges faced by the people of Sabah and Sarawak—from infrastructural inequality to higher costs of air travel and imported goods (and many many more....without going political in this post) While systemic change takes time, small efforts can make a big difference. Though it can be just baby steps, but I’ve committed to providing services in Sabah & Sarawak without imposing additional costs, ensuring locals receive the same value without extra burden. As we look ahead, I urge businesses and entrepreneurs across Malaysia to follow suit if you haven't already done so. Let’s work together to provide fair, accessible services to all Malaysians, regardless of region. By maintaining fair value and eliminating unnecessary costs, we can bridge the gap and foster a more equitable Malaysia. Happy Malaysia Day! #linkedin #malaysia #equality #unity
