In 2023, several research findings related to endometriosis have emerged. Some of the latest advancements include: 1. A study published in Science Translational Medicine found that endometriosis may be caused by a bacterial infection. This discovery could potentially lead to new treatments and a better understanding of the condition. 2. A global study revealed compelling evidence of a shared genetic basis for endometriosis and other types of pain seemingly unrelated to endometriosis. This finding could help researchers develop more targeted treatments for endometriosis. 3. A potential new treatment for endometriosis is being tested in a groundbreaking clinical trial involving 100 women in Edinburgh and London. The trial aims to assess whether the drug dichloroacetate helps relieve pain, which could be the first non-hormonal, non-surgical treatment for endometriosis. 4. Research has shown that pelvic floor therapy could be key to tackling endometriosis-induced pain. A 2021 study showed that incorporating pelvic floor therapy as part of a lifestyle could help women with deeply infiltrative endometriosis (DIE) – a type of endometriosis that can invade the pelvic cavity. Ischemic stroke is a major global health concern, causing nearly 10% mortality and 5% disability worldwide. As one of its major effects is blood-brain barrier (#BBB) disruption, the target of #therapeutic efforts to ameliorate neurologic functions is to restore BBB permeability. As #EVs are one of the hot topics for such efforts, Yiyang Li and colleagues investigated the therapeutic effects of bone marrow #mesenchymalstemcells (BMSC) EVs and brain endothelial cells (BEC) EVs comparatively. After isolating EVs by combination of HansaBioMed Life Sciences Ltd Exo-Prep and ultrafiltration, End3 cells were utilized to assess the therapeutic efficacy. Through these efforts, the researchers succeeded in demonstrating that Caveolin-1 deteriorates BBB permeability in acute ischemic stroke. More importantly, their results managed to demonstrate that EVs treatment can indeed restore neurological function, with BMSC-EVs being superior to BEC-EVs in this regard. https://lnkd.in/dsK7rR3W

NHS patients across England living with severe thalassaemia, a condition that requires regular blood transfusions to survive, could now be some of the the first in the world to benefit from a potentially life-changing one-off gene-editing treatment. Exagamglogene-autotemcel (or exa-cel), utilising Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR technology, is now available on the NHS thanks to a commercial agreement with its manufacturer, Vertex, and a positive recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). This groundbreaking treatment edits stem cells to allow functioning haemoglobin to be produced. As Kirthana shares in the story below: "I’m only 21 and the idea of depending on transfusions for quite literally the rest of my life is daunting." - the potential for this therapy to free patients from lifelong transfusions marks a significant advancement in modern medicine. In a week marred by ugly events across the UK, this hopeful and positive story on a treatment for a condition that disproportionately impacts those from minority ethnic backgrounds has rightly received wall-to-wall print and broadcast this morning, despite the busy news cycle.
