Wetlands are important features in the landscape that provide numerous beneficial services for people, fish, and wildlife. Some of these services, or functions, include protecting and improving water quality, providing fish and wildlife habitats, storing floodwaters, and maintaining surface water flow during dry periods. These valuable functions are the result of the unique natural characteristics of wetlands. Here are 7 benefits of restoring wetlands #imagovtt #wetlands #trinidadandtobago

Seagrasses: The salad for our wonderful Florida manatees. Did you know that another Sirenian species, the Dugongs, exhibit different seagrass foraging behaviors which can provide the dugong with more or less nutrients? You would think that Dugongs would perform the foraging behavior that provides more nutrients to the dugong as opposed to less nutrients. However, this is not always the case. When a dugong rips out the whole seagrass bed along with the rhizome, a plume of substrate is also brought along with it. This plume can cloud a dugong's vision and hinder the ability to detect predators. So it's really a cost and benefit tug-o-war.

Every corner of nature tells a story of survival, but some face challenges that tip the scales. The unchecked growth of free-ranging dog populations is threatening the survival of wildlife and the safety of communities. From attacking threatened species to spreading diseases, the damage is mounting. With support from Ashraya Hasta Trust, The Grasslands Trust has leveraged technology-driven surveillance to gather unprecedented wildlife data, forming the foundation for grassland wildlife conservation by identifying threats and challenges in human-dominated landscapes. Canada’s Migratory Birds Sanctuaries and National Wildlife Areas were created to protect wildlife and their habitats, including migratory birds and species at risk! Enforcement officers patrol these protected areas to make sure visitors follow the rules. If dogs are allowed, they must be on a leash, otherwise they could fetch you a ticket. Remember to: ✔️ Only visit locations open to the public ✔️ Plan your visit during opening hours ✔️ Stay on the trails ✔️ Leave no trace ✔️ Park only in designated areas If you see birds or nests being disturbed, call Canadian Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or 1-800-711-1800 (Quebec). “There is a thin line between compassion and misguided compassion” Key takeaways from scientific researchers - When a dog has access to food, it increases the dogs' fecundity (ability to reproduce successfully). - Communities must limit food resources for stray dogs, such as scraps or open garbage, to avoid attracting more dogs. Animal feeders should manage a fixed number of dogs, avoid feeding newcomers, and focus on reducing the population to prevent pack formation and associated problems. - In many areas, dogs also roam into wilderness zones, where they have become an important concern for wildlife conservation, either through the direct harassment and killing of wildlife, or through the spread of deadly diseases such as canine distemper virus. https://lnkd.in/dX3Ss_ep
