Stephanie started a great discussion here about the keys to longevity with clients when it comes to content creation. I haven't really stopped to think about it until I read this post, but my longest client relationship has lasted 19 years and counting. In that time, the company has gone through multiple acquisitions, several leadership changes, and some serious turnover with my primary points of contact. While I'd like to chalk this longevity up to deep knowledge of the broadband technology space and some mad writing chops, I suspect that if you asked my clients they'd say it's more about active listening and flexibility. I'm always on the lookout for those little cues that can help make the first draft as close to final as possible. For example, "We want the author to come across as approachable", "Company X doesn't do this as well as we do", or "Martin thought his last blog post didn't go deep enough into our differentiation." Picking up on the little things might prompt me to make a few tweaks to the usual tone of voice, gather a bit of competitive intelligence, or mine a recent product announcement for a little something extra — all without being asked. The flexibility part came in when I realized that my client contacts often have significant internal processes and politics to navigate that are outside my view. So instead of being rigid and adding even more friction to their day, I've found that it helps to work with them whenever possible. So I step outside my normal process now and then, send reminders when they need a nudge, offer to help move things along to the next step, and by all means, admit when "good enough" is good enough. While boundaries and standards are important, I do my best to focus on creating a productivity gain, not a productivity drain. Anyway, that's my secret to longevity. Listen actively and work flexibly. But never forget those mad writing chops! 😁
Last week I asked freelancers what their longest client relationship is. The longest? 20 years! 🤗 But for those of us who have been freelancing for less than 10 years, the average is still about 4 years. How incredible is that?! It goes to show just how important relationships are in the field. For those of you with ongoing client relationships, what do you think keeps your clients coming back to you? 🤔
