Thank you to Ciara McArdle for the insightful tour for the Malting Company of Ireland team at the Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard site. It was wonderful to see the final stage of the journey, which began with our growers' harvested barley, continued with MCI's expert malting processes, and culminated in the creation of Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard's world-renowned whiskeys. #malt #Dairygold #Tirlán #irishdistillers #pernodricard

Hey Distillers, the IBWSS state distillers webinar video is now out! It is a good catch up call on whats going on in different states, opportunities in making new products, compliance updates, sustainability and more. Speakers include Geoff Longenecker (San Diego Distillers Guild), John Granata (New Jersey Craft Distillers Guild), Aaron Bergh (Paso Robles Distillery Trail), President & Distiller (San Louis Obispo Distillers Guild), Teresa Casey (New York State Distillers Guild), David Cohen (Florida Craft Spirits Association). Check out video here. I am sure you will get some hints to plan your straretgy for 2024. One good question that I loved the answer was: Q: Are you building DTC infrastructure and sales? A: Lot of states get temporary DTC laws which means distillers only have 1-2 years to do DTC which is forcing them to not invest for long term as they don't know if the law will change and regulators will stop DTC. And that is one reason distillers are not able to invest heavy in building DTC capabilities. These group of amazing speakers will also be coming to the upcoming International Bulk Wine & Spirits Show where I will be moderating the panel of state distillers associations in July.

I have worked with B Corps and B Lab for about 15 years and one of my takeaways from this great article published by The New York Times and written by Eric Asimov is how competition among wineries has accelerated adoption of and adherence to the movement in that industry. The dynamic is familiar: when one industry player becomes certified, the pressure on their competitors ramps up thanks to healthy competition. And becoming certified is not an exercise of being 'dusted and done.' Once the values of stakeholder capitalism take root, companies thrive on continual improvement.
While organic and biodynamic certifications have long been valued in the winery scene, there's been a glaring blind spot when it comes to how workers are treated. But that’s changing. From Oregon to Bordeaux, wineries around the world are recognizing the importance of social sustainability, seeking #BCorp Certification to signal their commitment to people and the planet. “B Corp seemed the most complete and exhaustive commitment to our environmental and social goals.” - Saskia D., Chief Executive. In his latest article for The New York Times, Eric Asimov explores how these three B Corp certified wineries — Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, Sokol Blosser Winery and Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery — are reshaping the narrative of what it means to produce exceptional wines responsibly. 🍷🍇 Uncork the full story here: https://nyti.ms/3x0mN8o Sarah Schwimmer Alex Sokol Blosser Charlotte Levitt Felton Road Wines Limited Champagne Bollinger Champagne Charles Heidsieck Avignonesi Benjamin Bridge Ridgeview Wine Estate Rathfinny Wine Estate Chehalem Winery Stoller Family Estate Soter Vineyards

Great article covering two things I like, Wine and more importantly the growth of the B Corp Movement and how it moves the dial in creating an economic model that makes environmental, economic and social sense.

B.C.'s wine industry confronts a critical juncture following the devastation caused by a severe cold snap in the Okanagan Valley. With the 2024 harvest potentially facing a near-total loss, wineries across the province are grappling with the aftermath. The impact extends beyond the Okanagan, as Fraser Valley wineries, reliant on Okanagan grapes for production, also feel the pinch. Amidst the turmoil, winery owners are seeking exemptions from production requirements, recognizing the impossibility of meeting quotas without an adequate grape supply. While the government's pledge of up to $70 million to aid in replanting efforts is welcomed, the debate over importing grapes to sustain operations intensifies. Complicating matters further are the financial challenges posed by the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch (BCLDB) discounts, which favour wineries using solely B.C. fruit. This presents a dilemma for wineries considering importing grapes, as they risk losing out on crucial subsidies. In navigating these obstacles, wineries must tread carefully within existing regulations while exploring avenues for survival. The future of B.C.'s wine industry hangs in the balance as stakeholders grapple with the complexities of recovery and resilience. #BCwine #coldsnap #risingtideconsultants #liquorlicense #liquorlicensing #liquorindustry #licensing #hospitality #hospitalityvancouver #vancouverhospitality #vancouver #risingtide #rtc #liquorconsultants #vancouverrestaurants #liquorconsulting
